Forgettable years, weatherwise.

Recommended Posts

I am uploading BBC forecasts from 2002 at the moment but what a forgettable year that was at least around here. It lacked snow, there was a wintry day towards the back end of February but that really was it. Spring was pretty homogenous, some pleasant spring warmth but a lack of variety. Summer 2002 was indifferent, autumn had some pleasant late summer weather, a notable October gale but November was a mild washout. December was unremarkable.

A forgettable year in my books, hardly any standout moments.

Any other years that you found forgettable? Boring, lack of variety rather than an event you would rather forget.

Have to agree that 2002 was much of a muchness...dont remember 2008 being much different apart from a bit of snow at the end of October..anything remarkable happen in 1982?..1998?

2008 was one of my worst years for weather - the summer was especially poor, autumn uneventful, winter months rather dull and spring useless apart from the first half of May.

2009 was alot more eventful, 2007 was another poor one - poor winter - poor summer - v good spring though - autumn poor.

My number one choice would definitely be 2002- since I started observing the weather in 1993, no other year has come close to it. I have much the same set of associations with it as Kevin and I also remember it for a notable lack of cold nights, and also no notably hot spells.

I also found 1997, 1998, 2000, 2004, 2007 and 2011 relatively forgettable but not on a par with 2002.

In the case of 2008, the unusually sunny anticyclonic spell in February, the Easter and early-April snowfalls, the fine spell in the first half of May, the October snowfalls and some wintry outbreaks in late November and early December are enough to kick the year out of the forgettable category for me.

May 1997 was the most interesting month of that year for me. August 1997 despite how warm it was has never stuck in my memory. The Christmas Eve gale was the standout

1998: mid February warmth, mid April wintry spell and some May warmth but the rest of the year apart from the Boxing Day gale was forgettable

2000: that autumn washout and the post Christmas snowfall. Rest of the year was forgettable.

2004: the thundery August, Christmas Day snow. Rest of the year forgettable.

2007: that January gale, the April warmth, the washout June and July, rest of the year forgettable.

2011: the late September and early October heatwave. Apart from Easter 2011, I remember little from that April. The year lacked thunder, snow, fog. Hardly memorable.

August 1997 was very memorable as my eldest son was born in August 1997..the run up to his birth was quite uncomfortable for my wife and the heat helped none

I think August 1997 didn't stand out for me because of the lack of notable day-to-day weather- sunshine and rainfall totals were generally somewhat rather less remarkable than the temperature figures for instance, and living in Tyne and Wear the warm nights weren't as much of a problem as down south.

Again Kevin's recollections from those years are pretty similar to my own and on balance I also found May to be the most interesting and memorable month of 1997- it had some of almost everything really.

Going back a bit, 1988 was forgettable apart from that July and the late November cold and that warm December. There was that February gale but nothing else.

1991 wasn't especially memorable apart from the February snow and the chilly June. August onwards was forgettable.

2010 for me was bookend by memorable weather but inbetween ie March to mid November, there was not a lot of memorable weather. A complete lack of thunder.

Agreed, I'd go with 2002 and 2011 from more recent memory. I'm pretty certain there were some fairly nondescript years in the '70s, but my memory isn't good enough to pinpoint specifics.

I though 2011 was as boring as hell weatherwise apart from being a dry year nothing stood out.

2012. All I remember last year is a lack of storms (virtually none in my back yard) and just grey skies and light to moderate rain. It was just so monotonously boring. 2011 is up there aswell.

Although I haven't lived through the 1970s, I'd hazard a strong guess at 1974, and 1971, 1972 and 1977 are also candidates. Most accounts of those years don't suggest that very much happened. 2012, what a poor year last year was. The only month I'll remember is March for the remarkable warmth, the rest of the year was very unremarkable with some truly miserable months (April and June in particular).

Aye Ian, those are the very years I was thinking of mentioning...Though parts of summer '73 weren't too bad.

1973 sounds very boring, the data looks very boring, no particularly wet months, only one month on the dry side, no outstanding months temperature wise. Only individual weather events of interest.

Ah but you see April and June were remarkable in how wet they were. They are the wettest on record.

Yes remarkable but not months I want to remember, can appreciate some very cold months but I don't want to remember the misery I felt in those wet, miserable months!

I was also surprised at the mention of 2005- there were severe gales in early January and some marked temperature switches between cold and hot, e.g. mid-March, mid-June and mid-November, and while the summer wasn't necessarily notable for frequency of convective events, their intensity was often unusual, e.g. 19th June, 24th June, 28th June, 31st August. The summer also boasted some memorable spells of warm sunshine in late-June and also a spell in early-July.

I omitted 1973 because of some short-lived snowstorms in the north and west in mid-February, snowfalls in April, a hot start to September, localised snowfalls in October and widespread snowfalls in late-November, but it is true that there were long periods when not a lot happened- I'd have a more definite opinion on it if I'd lived through it! Further back, it doesn't seem that very much happened in 1961 or 1967 either.

Agree with 2011. 2012 was memorable for all the wrong reasons! 2005 was a good year here, one of our best northerlies was in Nov 2005 and we had our last decent elevated storm in May that year; the summer wasn't bad either - better than 2004,7,8,9,11,12.

What about 1988? I don't remember much notable that year although I was quite young at the time. Possibly the least memorable of the 1980s?

2002 - July 31st delivered one of the most intense and wicked thunderstorms I think Peterborough had ever seen, with a cracking spanish plume delivering the goods.

2005 - unremarkable...? I think that year has to go down as one of the most remarkable years in history for extreme weather, very decent thunderstorms in June, with 2 spanish plumes in 1 week. 24th June saw southern England with extreme storms and Glastonbury getting waterlogged. 2nd set came on the 28th June which delivered an outstanding evening of severe storms for my area (Cambridgeshire) from about 8PM - 2AM. June 19th saw temps of 33c, then an event in the Northeast similar to 28th June 2012 brought flash flooding and extreme rainfall. The 31st August 05 saw arguably the best storm I've ever witnessed in my whole life, 60+ strikes per minute and non stop low deep rumbling all evening long. A truly remarkable and unforgettable year IMO.

2008, 2011 and 2012 were pretty awful tbh with a few exceptions here and there, certainly years I will not be remembering that well for anything remotely mind-boggling.

I dunno which years i'd pick looking back, spring 2000 i dont recall apart from some light snow showers during the easter hols that year. 1998 again there's parts of the year i don't remember as the same with 1997 but there were some notable events still, also can hardly remember anything from the summer of 2011 because the weather was so boring.

2008 should be forgettable as it was just dull, wet and cool nearly all year but because of the lack of any temperature extremes and most notably the worst summer i've ever known it will stick in my memory. Warmest day of the year was during the second week in May and even then it was only 25c for one day. I'll stop before i rant on about how that summer was Posted Image

Though i will add 2005 is one of my most memorable years, had a nice selection of everything. Year of Thunderstorms as well it has to be said some real corkers that summer.
