Warnings just updated we are now in the clear for Saturday

Issued at: 1208 on Thu 21 Mar 2013

Valid from: 0005 on Fri 22 Mar 2013

Valid to: 2359 on Fri 22 Mar 2013

An area of rain and sleet moving from the south later on Thursday and during Friday will turn increasingly to snow as it does so. Some heavy and persistent snowfall is likely to develop across many areas, with 5-10 cm of snow in many inland parts, and perhaps as much as 20-40 cm over high ground. Taking into account the strong to gale force winds, some atrocious conditions with drifting and blizzards are expected for many upland areas in particular. The public should be aware of the potential for significant disruption, particularly to transport and to power supplies. This is an update of the warning issued on Wednesday. Amber warnings are also being issued to reflect the increased risk of disruption in parts of Northern Ireland, the Midlands, North Wales and northern England on Friday.

The areas affected has been downgraded now only - Darlington, Durham, Northumberland

Let's face it, this is going to be yet another galling event, when we see a large swathe of the country getting substantial - record-breaking even - falls, while we miss out. I know we get a lot of convective stuff, but OMO the worst thing about our region from a snow point of view is that we miss out on the truly jaw-dropping blizzard/foot-of-snow-in-one-goevents.

Amber warnings as of 12:36 for snow include Northern Ireland, Wales (north), North West England, West Midlands & East Midlands those look to be the worst areas to be in for the snow we look to be too far north for the worst of it

TBH I'm not expecting much in Darlo

Friday cloudy all day till the evening when light snow is forecast - http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/forecast/darlington#?tab=fiveDay&fcTime=1363910400

Further snow showers are expected, bringing mainly slight accumulations of snow but perhaps a few cm over some inland and hilly parts. Ice may continue to be a problem night and morning, primarily on untreated surfaces.

Saturday's warning is back only till 11am though

Chief Forecaster's assessment

The air mass across northern Britain will remain exceptionally cold for any time of the year, let alone March. Fortunately for eastern Scotland and northeast England the earlier threat of more persistent, heavy snow seems to have receded, with a regime of scattered snow showers and night-time ice posing a lower risk of disruption overall.

A slow-moving band of rain, sleet and snow will continue to affect many central parts of the UK during Saturday. Further significant snow accumulations are likely on hills, with continued drifting and blizzard conditions in the strong southeasterly winds. At lower levels, some areas could see 5-10 cm of snow, though details on locations most at risk remains very uncertain at this stage. The public should be aware of the continued risk of significant disruption.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

A frontal system remains slow-moving across central and northwestern parts of the UK during Saturday, again giving some significant snowfall, particularly across high ground. The risk of disruptive snowfall looks to spread further south and east across England than on Friday, though in these areas conditions will be more marginal for snow, with perhaps rain and sleet becoming more prevalent at times.

Covers: Durham, Gateshead, Hartlepool, Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside, Sunderland, Darlington, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland, Stockton-on-Tees

The NAE gives Keswick 17cm of snow by Saturday at 06:00. If that comes off I won't complain as another 5cm or so would likely fall from the second band during the day. :D
