UK Outlook for Tuesday 2 Jan 2018 to Thursday 11 Jan 2018:

2018 will start on an unsettled but mild note with weather systems moving in quickly across the UK from the Atlantic, with spells of rain and strong winds. A cold start on Tuesday is expected with bands of rain and strong winds through the day. This unsettled theme looks set to last through the period with some large amounts of rain falling particularly in western areas. Occasional snow remains likely over higher ground in the North and central areas during this time. Any quieter spells are likely to be rather short lived, but the south and east will be drier. Temperatures will vary around average, although some widespread frosts are possible in any quieter interludes.

UK Outlook for Friday 12 Jan 2018 to Friday 26 Jan 2018:

A northwest southeast split is likely to be in place by the second week of January with the best of any dry weather in the southeast; the northwest likely to see more rain and stronger winds at times. Temperatures are thought to be around normal or milder than average. Any colder interludes will be shorter lived. There are weaker signals for a colder, more settled spell; this scenario however looks less likely.

Here's hoping we can get some favourable blocking in February then.  January looks a bust.

Looks dreadful! You just know this god awful vortex will be replaced by northern blocking by april.

Its predictable..

Anything can happen in the next 16 days who would have guessed we would have had snow yesterday when last week it was looking milder.

Heading into the first weekend of the New Year and the weather is likely to turn more showery and probably a little colder. The showers will be most frequent in the west, and perhaps turning to snow at times towards the north. Winds also remaining strong with gales possible at times. UK Outlook for Saturday 13 Jan 2018 to Saturday 27 Jan 2018:

Probably remaining unsettled throughout the period, with further spells of rain, showers and strong winds moving across the country. The rain and showers will be most frequent in the west, with a continued risk of snow across northern and central parts in particular. There is however a chance of a more settled spell developing around the middle of next month bringing a risk of widespread frosts and fog. Temperatures likely to average out around normal for January, oscillating between milder during the spells of wind and rain, and colder during the more settled and showery periods.

An improvement here too! We lost the dreaded northwest/southeast split and the milder than average temperatures.

Yes, a definite improvement in both updates today.  Although they do not expect any sustained periods of cold weather courtesy of high latitude blocking, there is plenty of interest, especially for those who live in more central and northerly locations.  However, as we've seen during December, this has included parts of the south at times, too.

Indeed the UK is too small to be so exact. A runner low can easily shift 100 miles in its track to include the south at times. I would say inland parts of the south can do better in such westerly/northwesterly set ups than places further northwest such as Manchester. The Irish sea is a killer for me in those marginal set ups but still preferable than subtropical southwesterlies.

By the way, this update is a relief if we consider how dire the EC46 dayer looked last night on weeks 3 and 4.

UK Outlook for Thursday 4 Jan 2018 to Saturday 13 Jan 2018:

The end of next week is set to remain unsettled with bands of rain interspersed by showers moving across the country. It will also be windy, with the risk of gales or severe gales at times. As we go into the first weekend of the New Year the weather is likely to turn colder for many northern and western areas, and here there could be some wintry showers as well as overnight frosts. More frequent showers or perhaps longer spells of rain could continue across the south at first, before colder and probably drier conditions arrive here. It will be windy at times, with a risk of gales at first. The following week is likely to start cold with overnight frosts, but more unsettled conditions may begin to develop later.

UK Outlook for Friday 5 Jan 2018 to Sunday 14 Jan 2018:

Friday is set to remain unsettled with rain or showers across much of the UK, which is likely to turn to snow across northern parts. It will also be windy, with the risk of gales at times in exposed locations. As we go into the first weekend of the New Year, the cold conditions are likely to spread to all parts and there could be some wintry showers as well as overnight frosts. It will be windy at times, with a risk of gales at first, but the wind should ease for most parts by Sunday. The following week is likely to start very cold with a chance of snow, but more unsettled and milder conditions may begin to develop later in the week from the west.

UK Outlook for Monday 15 Jan 2018 to Monday 29 Jan 2018:

During the second half of January a return to more unsettled weather looks likely, but exactly when this occurs is still subject to a lot of uncertainty. As changeable conditions become re-established we will see spells of rain, showers and strong winds moving across the country, but always with a risk of wintry conditions and a threat of snow, especially at the start of this period. It is likely to be windy, with a risk of gales at times. Temperatures are likely to average out around normal for January, but oscillating between milder during the spells of wind and rain, and colder during any more settled or showery periods.

UK Outlook for Saturday 6 Jan 2018 to Monday 15 Jan 2018:

During the first weekend of the New Year we see a gradual shift to colder conditions, with the colder weather already in the north spreading slowly southwards across the rest of the UK. There'll be wintry showers in places, with a risk of some sleet even in the south, and it will be frosty overnight. It will be windy at first, with a risk of gales, but the wind should ease for most by Sunday. The following week is likely to start very cold with a chance of some snow showers in the east at times. Thereafter there is likely be a gradual return to milder conditions later in the week as frontal systems make progress into the west of the UK, but timings of this transition are still uncertain.

UK Outlook for Sunday 7 Jan 2018 to Tuesday 16 Jan 2018:

On Sunday and Monday we see colder conditions become established across the UK, bringing plenty of dry and bright weather, but also some wintry showers for eastern areas. Strong winds are likely in the south and east, making it feel bitterly cold here and it will be frosty for many overnight. As we go into the second half of next week there is likely be a gradual return to milder conditions as frontal systems make erratic progress into the west of the UK, bringing with them the threat of some snow. There'll still be plenty of dry weather with some sunshine, though wintry showers may continue in the east. Temperatures remain rather cold with overnight frosts, but may recover closer to normal at times from the west.

come on Paul, more like being objective and realistic with what they can see on their screens and years of experience in trying to evaluate the probabilities.

Aye, the word MAY covers your back ok. Still think most on here could evaluate the same probability though.  I remember the words from my course tutor at Shinfield, Mr Capstick.." study the charts son and if you get it wrong, take the flake. Buy us a pint and I will show you how to get it right ".. Still bought him copious pints and was never shown how to get it right...!
