If the set up changes then there can be wintrier weather later in the month. Last year we had a northerly outbreak in April with snow showers in places so not that unusual. Only March after all.

Indeed it isn't that unusual.  April 1989, late March and early April 2008 gave snow to a fair few places and there are plenty of other examples, too.

UK Outlook for Friday 3 Mar 2017 to Sunday 12 Mar 2017:

An unsettled picture is likely as frontal systems move into the UK from the south or southwest, bringing wet and windy weather at times. Snow is likely over northern hills, with a low risk of some snow more widely at times across the north. Between frontal systems, there should be some spells of brighter weather with showers which may be wintry at times in the north. Nevertheless, some brief quieter, drier spells are also likely. Temperatures will generally vary around normal for the time of year, often slightly above average in the south but rather cold at times in the north, with night frosts. There remains the possibility of a more widely settled but colder period, perhaps giving wintry showers in the east and north.

UK Outlook for Monday 13 Mar 2017 to Monday 27 Mar 2017:

For the rest of March signals are weak and confidence is low. It will probably be rather unsettled with spells of wet and windy weather at first, interspersed with brighter and showery conditions. Some snow is also possible across the north of the UK. There should, however, also be some drier and brighter spells, where we may see some local frost and fog at times overnight. Temperatures are expected to be slightly above normal for the time of year. However, there remains the possibility of seeing some colder periods, with a chance of snow in places. This is more likely later in the period.

UK Outlook for Sunday 5 Mar 2017 to Tuesday 14 Mar 2017:

An unsettled picture is likely to continue. Frontal systems will move into the UK from the south or southwest at first, bringing bands of rain and strong winds at times, mainly across southern and central parts. Into the second week of March, the wet and windy weather will mainly affect northern and western areas, with snow over the hills at times. The best of the drier and brighter weather will start to develop across the south and east. Temperatures will generally vary around normal for the time of year, often slightly above average in the south but rather cold at times in the north, with night frosts. UK Outlook for Tuesday 7 Mar 2017 to Thursday 16 Mar 2017:

It should remain changeable through to the middle of March with showers or longer spells of rain affecting all areas at times, these occasionally heavy. However, there will also be some brief drier and clearer interludes. Most areas likely to see some wet spells through the first few days of the period. Further rain is also expected later next week, this mainly in the north where some snow is likely over higher ground. It will also be windy at times with gales, locally severe, in exposed areas of the south at first, and also the far north. Temperatures will be around, perhaps a little below, normal at first, meaning overnight frosts are possible during any calmer periods, but it will be milder at times.

UK Outlook for Friday 17 Mar 2017 to Friday 31 Mar 2017:

The changeable conditions look set to continue through the rest of March, though there is low confidence in the detail. Colder, showery spells are likely to be interspersed with milder, more generally wet periods. There is also likely to be a wide variation in temperatures. It may become generally cold around the middle of the month, with more in the way of frosts and perhaps snow, especially in the north, before turning milder later.

UK Outlook for Thursday 9 Mar 2017 to Saturday 18 Mar 2017:

An unsettled theme looks likely until the middle of March. Bands of rain will cross the UK with more showery and bright interludes probable in between. The heaviest rain is expected in western and north-western areas with wintry showers likely over higher ground. The unsettled weather could also bring windy spells with gales in exposed places. Temperatures are thought to be around average; perhaps milder in the southeast, but all areas could get colder as we go through the period with more of a northerly influence. This period could bring snow for a time even to lower levels in the north; with the best of the dry weather further southwest where it could feel much more settled. Overnight frosts could also feature nationwide through the middle of March.

UK Outlook for Sunday 19 Mar 2017 to Sunday 2 Apr 2017:

Initially a rather cold northerly influence is the probable scenario, and feeling generally more settled, especially in the south, however longer spells of rain stay more likely in the north and east. Towards the end of March there is a degree of uncertainty, but there is some evidence in favour of a more settled spell of weather. This could bring drier-than-average conditions, with temperatures probably around average for late March, however the confidence for this set-up is low.

latest met office update is a carbon copy of yesterday, I don't know why that would be because the models were more wintry yesterday for mid march unless they are a day behind and just dialled this update in so they could enjoy their sunday dinner!.lol

It's the same because their senior man decided that with all the data available the outlook shows much the same as yesterday.

But it doesn't John, it's clearly downgraded the cold potential..just a little joke anyway as I'm full of respect for professional forecasters.:)

If I don't post an update in that thread please assume it's not changed bar the dates - I only post updates in that thread when the met office change the wording which some weeks can only be once or twice

:)

UK Outlook for Tuesday 21 Mar 2017 to Tuesday 4 Apr 2017:

There are signals for the second half of March and into early April to see some kind of blocked patterned at least initially. This means there are signs for generally drier than average conditions and more settled weather across the country. However, there is still the potential for showers and longer spells of rain at times, particularly in the north-west. Temperatures look to be around average for the time of year.

UK Outlook for Sunday 12 Mar 2017 to Tuesday 21 Mar 2017:

Remaining unsettled for much of the UK on Sunday, it'll be rather windy with showers or longer spells of rain. However, conditions are likely to become drier, brighter and less windy as we head into the new working week, particularly across southern and eastern areas. During this time, we will probably still see occasional bands of rain moving in from the west to affect mainly the north of the UK though. Later in the period it may well gradually become more unsettled and windy again across the country with gales in the northwest at times. Temperatures will probably be near of slightly above average, but still with the risk of night frosts, especially in central and southern parts.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 22 Mar 2017 to Wednesday 5 Apr 2017:

There are currently signals for the end of March and into early April to see some kind of blocked pattern for the UK weather. This means there are signs for generally drier than average conditions and more settled weather than normal across the country. However, there is still the potential for showers and longer spells of rain at times, particularly in the north-west, where it could also be windy at times. Details of temperatures are a little uncertain, but temperatures generally look to be around average for the time of year.
