UK Outlook for Saturday 16 Mar 2013 to Saturday 30 Mar 2013:

Most areas are likely to be colder than average during the end of March with an east or southeasterly influence most probable. Generally, there are no strong signals regarding precipitation, but taking the period as a whole, in an east or southeasterly regime, some western and northwestern areas of the UK are most likely to be drier and sunnier than normal.

UK Outlook for Thursday 7 Mar 2013 to Saturday 16 Mar 2013:

Still mostly dry at first in the north and east of the UK, but unsettled with cloud and outbreaks of rain elsewhere. This more unsettled weather is expected to spread to all areas by the weekend, with some heavier rain possible in southwest Britain at times. Through the first weekend and early next week, most places will keep the generally unsettled conditions, with the best of any drier and brighter spells towards the northeast of the country. On the whole, milder than of late but also quite breezy, with a chance of gales developing in the far northeast and southwest of Britain at times. Later in the period, little change is expected overall, but temperatures will perhaps fall a little below normal once again.

UK Outlook for Friday 8 Mar 2013 to Sunday 17 Mar 2013:

Unsettled at the start of the period, with cloud and outbreaks of rain moving northeast across the country. Some heavier rain is possible at times, mainly in southwest Britain, and it will be generally rather windy with temperatures close to normal for the time of year. As we go through the period, most places will keep the generally unsettled conditions, but there will be a trend towards below average temperatures across the UK. In association with this gradual change to colder conditions, overnight frost will become more common again and there is an increasing chance of precipitation being of sleet or snow, especially in north and east Britain. It will also continue quite windy at times, with the possibility of gales in exposed areas.

UK Outlook for Saturday 9 Mar 2013 to Monday 18 Mar 2013:

Generally unsettled over the course of the weekend, with many areas seeing spells of rain and drizzle accompanied by extensive low cloud, and also a risk of hill snow in the north. Also rather windy, particularly across the north and northeast. As we progress through this period, predominantly unsettled conditions look to persist across the UK, but with a trend to steadily colder conditions once more. This means that precipitation across northern and eastern areas (most of which will be showery) is likely to turn increasingly wintry by midweek next week. Strong winds at times will exacerbate the cold feel, especially in exposed eastern areas, and there will be an increasing risk overnight frost. The best of any brighter spells are likely across the far north and northwest.

UK Outlook for Sunday 10 Mar 2013 to Tuesday 19 Mar 2013:

Unsettled and mostly cloudy at first with occasional rain in many places, most persistent across eastern Scotland and, later, in southwestern areas. Some snow is likely across the higher ground of Scotland. Generally rather windy, so feeling quite chilly, especially in the wetter areas. Turning colder in northern areas through Monday with an increasing risk of snow falling to lower-levels later. From Tuesday, much colder conditions look like developing nationwide with overnight frost returning. Snow showers increasingly affecting northern and eastern regions and perhaps coastal areas further west. There may also be some more general rain, sleet or hill snow further south, with a risk of snow falling to lower-levels across central Britain at times. Signals are that it may gradually become drier and less cold the week after next.

well we may pontificate about models but this is probably, as it should be, the most realistic idea on the weather from the weekend onwards.

If this forecast and their 16-30 day one are anywhere near correct regarding temperatures then many of us are going to feel rather sick when our next heating bills arrive!

UK Outlook for Monday 11 Mar 2013 to Wednesday 20 Mar 2013:

Much colder conditions are expected to develop early next week. Rain, sleet and hill snow in the southeast at first on Monday clearing away with brighter conditions elsewhere spreading south. Snow showers are likely to increasingly affect northern and eastern regions through next week, but all areas are at risk of seeing sleet, hail and snow showers at times. There is a risk of some significant and disruptive amounts of snow in places, but there is currently uncertainty regarding which areas are most at risk. There will however, also be some sunshine, particularly further west. Widespread overnight frosts returning with a risk of icy patches. Signals are that it may gradually become slightly less cold by the following week as bands of rain edge eastwards, perhaps preceded by further snow.

Well, I think that's possibly the most wintry forecast I've seen from the Met Office since November/December 2010 and we're in March! If this cold spell comes off as predicted, I feel March 2013 will certainly be one to remember and not just for those who live in the Midlands northwards!

UK Outlook for Tuesday 12 Mar 2013 to Thursday 21 Mar 2013:

Many areas will be largely dry but cloudy through Tuesday and Wednesday although there should be some bright or sunny spells. Sleet or snow showers are likely to affect some areas, particularly towards the east. Windy at first but winds easing through Wednesday. It will be cold and frosty with icy patches in places. The cold weather looks set to dominate through the rest of the period with some sunny spells but further snow showers, most likely across the north and east, with overnight frost and ice. There is the risk of more persistent wet weather affecting some southern and central areas at times, with the risk of rain preceded by snow inland. Towards the end of the period, there are some signs conditions across Britain turn somewhat less cold.

UK Outlook for Friday 15 Mar 2013 to Sunday 24 Mar 2013:

Much of this period looks set to remain generally unsettled and at times windy, with temperatures remaining below average. Friday and the weekend will see rather cloudy conditions with outbreaks of rain and hill snow, with perhaps some snow to low-levels for a time in the east and north. Into the following week, the unsettled theme continues, with a likelihood of some heavy rain, initially in the west, this risk transferring east with time. Snow to low-levels also remains a risk and most likely over northern, eastern and central parts. Overnight temperatures will be cold enough for frost and ice. Beyond midweek, the cold and at times unsettled conditions are set to continue at least at first, though perhaps becoming a little less cold by the end of this period.

UK Outlook for Saturday 16 Mar 2013 to Monday 25 Mar 2013:

Conditions this weekend and next week are set to remain unsettled and on the cold side for March. Cloud, rain and hill snow expected over much of the UK to begin with will slowly clear allowing brighter but showery conditions to follow for later Saturday and Sunday. Some of these showers could be heavy and wintry. Often rather cloudy next week with further spells of rain or snow. Some heavy rain is likely at times, whilst northern, eastern and central parts have the greatest chance of any snow. Temperatures remaining below average; nights often cold and frosty with icy patches, feeling cold by day, especially over northern Britain where it will often be windy. Looking beyond next week, conditions are expected to remain unsettled with below average temperatures.

A subtle change in that forecast as, for the last few days, it had indicated that milder air could move in towards the end of the period.

This is now replaced with a generally cold outlook throughout.
