One assumes this 'backtrack' as you label it is a scientific assessment of all the data at their disposal to suggest that conditions look now like being less wintry. It would be pretty daft if they did not update do you not think?

I was merely commenting on a change in their forecast to something less wintry today. Not a criticism and to be honest I was expecting a downgraded wintry outlook from them. Fine by me.......

UK Outlook for Sunday 24 Feb 2013 to Tuesday 5 Mar 2013:

Staying cold into early next week, with widespread frost by night, and quite breezy conditions in the south, making it feel colder still. Generally a good deal of cloud around, with northern and extreme western parts tending to see the best of any sunshine and less cold here by day. Perhaps some mainly light wintry flurries over some eastern, southern and central parts of the UK at first. There are signs into the start of March of a change to less-cold conditions with temperatures slowly returning to nearer average for the time of year. This change is likely to be associated with a return to more unsettled weather, mainly towards the northwest of the UK.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 6 Mar 2013 to Wednesday 20 Mar 2013:

Some areas still a little colder than average, perhaps more especially across the eastern side of the UK, with some frosty nights. Generally, there are no strong signals regarding precipitation, but taking the period as a whole, some areas of the UK will probably end up a little drier than usual for the time of year.

UK Outlook for Monday 25 Feb 2013 to Wednesday 6 Mar 2013:

The cold weather will continue into next week, with widespread overnight frost and brisk winds in the south, making it feel colder still. Generally rather cloudy, especially in central and eastern parts initially bringing the chance of mainly light snow showers, but also a risk of more persistent rain, sleet or snow in the south. Brighter in the north and west but with a risk of fog overnight. Towards the end of next week temperatures may become less cold in the northwest of the UK with unsettled conditions, while elsewhere remains cold and dry. Into the following week there remain signs that the settled, unusually dry conditions may recede to be replaced with less cold, more unsettled weather.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 26 Feb 2013 to Thursday 7 Mar 2013:

The cold and relatively drier spell of weather will continue during next week, with brisk winds in the south and southeast making it feel very raw here. It will remain rather cloudy, especially in central and eastern parts bringing the chance of scattered, mainly light snow showers. Clearer in the north and west but with a risk of freezing fog and hard frosts overnight. These conditions look likely to continue in the south during the weekend, whilst signs of more unsettled, less-cold Atlantic weather arrives in the far northwest with a risk of snow preceding it. Into the following week there is a large degree of uncertainty with how the weather will evolve from here, but temperatures across most parts should return closer to normal with occasionally more unsettled conditions.

no mention of a cold arctic outbreak there, although they do say "large degree of uncertainty". I guess the arctic outbreak is one of a number of scenarios which at present they don't favour.

I imagine they see this as a possibility but will wait to see how things evolve before mentioning it as a possibility. Up until the last couple of days this has been an unlikely scenario.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 27 Feb 2013 to Friday 8 Mar 2013:

The cold and relatively dry spell of weather will continue during next week, with brisk winds in the south accentuating the cold feel. It will remain rather cloudy, especially in central and eastern parts bringing the chance of scattered, mainly light showers, perhaps wintry on hills. Clearer in the north and west but with a risk of freezing fog and hard frosts overnight. These conditions look likely to continue in the south during the weekend, whilst it seems likely that more unsettled weather will arrive from the northwest, with a risk of snow preceding it. Into the following week there is a large degree of uncertainty, but temperatures across most parts should return closer to normal with occasionally more unsettled conditions, particularly in the north and west.

UK Outlook for Thursday 28 Feb 2013 to Saturday 9 Mar 2013:

Much of early March is likely to see below average temperatures, with a greater-than-average incidence of frost. Nearer average temperatures should see out February however, with rain over northwestern Scotland weakening markedly as it moves south towards next weekend. Brighter, colder and more showery conditions should follow from the north, with these showers wintry over hills. Next weekend should start mainly dry but rather cold despite sunny spells, however there is an increasing likelihood of more unsettled and breezier conditions developing in the north later, with some snow possible. These cloudier conditions with outbreaks of rain, sleet and hill snow may then spread south into the new working week. Colder-than-average conditions look to remain dominant towards the end of the period, although some lengthy dry periods are also likely.

UK Outlook for Friday 1 Mar 2013 to Sunday 10 Mar 2013:

Rather cloudy on Friday, the cloud thick enough for a little light rain or drizzle in places, but mostly dry. More widespread rain reaching the far northwest later on Friday, before moving southwards across the UK on Saturday, but becoming increasingly light and patchy. Clearer skies with wintry showers following into northeastern areas later on Saturday, persisting through Sunday, and perhaps a few wintry showers for some Irish Sea coasts as well. Northwestern areas remain unsettled and a little less cold, but elsewhere conditions mainly fine and dry into next week, with the best of any sunshine towards the south and east. Temperatures generally near or a little below average at first, turning cold, locally very cold in the northeast for a time, then generally a little less cold later.

UK Outlook for Saturday 2 Mar 2013 to Monday 11 Mar 2013:

Largely dry through this weekend. Variable amounts of cloud, with the best of the sunshine towards the north and west of the UK. Some rain possible in the far north, and perhaps some wintry showers into northeastern areas later Saturday and into Sunday. Breezy at times in the south, especially the southwest, and feeling cold in that northeasterly breeze. Rather cold in the south and east, but nearer normal temperatures in the north. Into next week, probably becoming more unsettled and windier from the southwest, and still a few wintry showers possible in the northeast. Mainly dry conditions may persist across central areas well into next week. Temperatures may recover to nearer normal in the south with time, but rather cold elsewhere with further frosts.

Largely dry through Sunday and Monday with variable amounts of cloud. The best of the sunshine is most likely towards the far south of the UK and parts of the west and northwest. Outbreaks of light rain may affect some central areas at times and northeastern areas later. Breezy in the south at first, especially the southwest. Rather cold in the south and east, but nearer normal temperatures in the north. Thereafter, probably becoming more unsettled and windier from the southwest, with an increasing risk of rain across some southern and western areas. The best of chance of any dry conditions lasting is most likely across some central and eastern parts. Temperatures may recover to nearer normal in the south with time, but rather cold elsewhere with further overnight frosts.

UK Outlook for Monday 4 Mar 2013 to Wednesday 13 Mar 2013:

Next week is likely to start generally dry with variable amounts of cloud but probably the best of the sunshine across southern and western areas. However, even northern and eastern places should see increasing amounts of sunshine by mid-week. Through the remainder of the week it will probably turn more unsettled in the southwest with rain at times. Other areas may hold on to these drier conditions for longer, but bands of rain are likely to increasingly advance further north and east, giving a low risk of snow in northern areas. Winds generally light at first, but southeasterly winds are likely to strengthen in southern areas. Generally rather cold with further overnight frosts for many, especially at first, but temperatures probably recovering to nearer normal in the south with time.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 5 Mar 2013 to Thursday 14 Mar 2013:

Mostly dry with sunshine on Tuesday for most, but through the week it will become increasingly unsettled and windier with cloud and spells of rain in the south gradually spreading northwards to affect Scotland by the end of the week. It will become milder than of late with temperatures nearer to normal, but it is likely to stay rather cold in the north of Britain, with the drier and brighter weather probably lasting longest here. A chance of hill snow in the north later in the week, and a risk of gales developing in the far northeast and southwest of Britain especially. Into the following week, it will probably stay rather unsettled with temperatures generally near normal, but with a risk of conditions gradually returning to colder than average later.

UK Outlook for Friday 15 Mar 2013 to Friday 29 Mar 2013:

Most areas are likely to be colder than average during the end of March with an east or southeasterly influence most probable. Generally, there are no strong signals regarding precipitation, but taking the period as a whole, in an east or southeasterly regime, some western and northwestern areas of the UK are most likely to be drier and sunnier than normal.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 6 Mar 2013 to Friday 15 Mar 2013:

Through the rest of the week and into the weekend it will become increasingly unsettled and generally breezier with spells of initially light rain in the south and west gradually spreading northeastwards to affect Scotland later in the week. Some heavier rain is also possible in the southwest later. It will become milder than of late in the south with temperatures closer to normal. The drier and brighter weather should last longest in the north, with a chance of hill snow over the Scottish mountains once the more unsettled weather arrives. Also, a risk of gales developing in the far northeast and southwest of Britain. Into the following week, it will probably stay rather unsettled with temperatures near normal initially, but perhaps gradually returning to colder than average later on.
