Thursday 24th January 2013:

A notable feature of this lengthy cold spell here has been the persistent cloudiness, only a couple of short spells have seen cloud breaks, when that did occur on the 16th and 22nd the temperature plummeted over the snow cover. This cold spell would have been considerably more severe had there been more nights clear of cloud.

Another mostly overcast night, icy and frosty. Low just –1.0c with –2.2c on the snow. At observation, overcast with a few snow grains. Mean snow depth 8.5cm 85%.

Today's readings for the 24 hrs up to 09:00 GMT:

Maximum temperature to 18:00 GMT yesterday: 0.3°C

Minimum temperature overnight -1.0°C

24-hour maximum 0.3°C

24-hour minimum: -1.0°C

Minimum temperature on snow / grass: -2.2°C

Maximum wind gust: (Midnight to Midnight) 18.4 mph ENE

Rainfall total: 0.3mm

Current Conditions:

Temperature: -0.5°C

Humidity: 92.2%

Dew point –1.6°C

Wind Direction: Force 2 NE

Barometer 1018 mb: Trend: rising.

Yesterday:

Another cloudy night, with a slight thaw for a few hours, though re-freezing later. There was a little light snow, which gave just a sprinkling over the old cover. Low –0.3c around dawn. At observation, overcast, very icy, the odd snow grain falling. Mean snow depth 8.5cm 90%. Light snow commenced around 09:30 GMT. Mainly light snow then continued until early evening, though very little additional accumulation as the temperature climbed a little above freezing. The evening saw the snow die out, though it remained overcast.

January 2013 so far:

Mean temperature: 2.5c (-1.2c) of local average)

Maximum temperature: 12.5c on the 3rd

Currently snowing heavily after an overcast night with occasional sleet/snow flurries.

Its currently 1.4C with a dewpoint of exactly 0.0C after a min temp last night of 1.0C.

Snowcover getting patchy but still more than 50% cover, so an 11th consecutive snow lying day.

Clear intervals and a slight frost last night.

Cloud soon broke up around dawn with a sunny but cold day, only a slight thaw. 5cm snow cover remaining generally in the garden and on surrounding fields, although south facing slopes are clearing. Light ESE breeze.

Clear and frosty this evening.

Cold and cloudy with some sunny outbreaks today, temp atm is -0.2c on 13cms of snow.

A year ago today, mild westerlies for most, cooler in the north and east.

...9 days later, a strong easterly flow was examined over most of England and Wales. A very cold spell with ice days for many in the south.

Cold, overcast and uneventful, like many days recently. The thaw continues, with less than 20% general snow coverage left and none on the roads or pavements. Maximum 2.0, minimum 0.0. Wind light E.
