Reasons why the cold snap in Dublin was utter rubbish

1. PPN was so light ,intensity would of brought temp down

2.South easterly winds are to warm off the Irish Sea, unlike easterly/northeasterly

3.If it was snowing in London at -1 what chance had we got when the ppn got here extremely modified

4.Temps were constantly on the wrong side of marginal

5.All the PPN that came across was from a low pressure , no conventional showers (we may of done better)

All in all very poor ,high ground done very well as you would expect ,maybe a slight adjustment to the wind direction would of helped

Im not a huge fan of scandi blocks as they often dont bring the cold far enough westwards to properly affect us. I dont think the cold pool was too cold either really,i think with scandi blocks and cold pools to our northeast they have to be very cold indeed for us to get much joy. If the cold pool was as cold as last years one which brought that big freeze to much of Europe last Feb we probably would have done well. What we lacked also was a stronger airflow that would have helped things.

If the cold pool had been as cold as last year im sure we would have had a good spell,it was such a pity we missed out last year, the azores high scuppered our chances.

Even though the cold was further west this time it just was not cold enough especially as ireland was at the end of the line (well we are always at the end of the line in these set ups)

We would have done ok only for that ridging over the Irish Sea. Its strong cap meant convection was only around 5000 ft deep - not enough for any decent precipitation. When the ridge finally did move off on Tuesday we saw things fire into action.

It just shows that even with an easterly with -8 uppers there are still other factors to consider. The weather here will always throw curve balls our way. You'd think we've done something wrong to it....
