That is exactly what I was referring to earlier. I never realised this.. But a SE'ly flow with a front moving in from the west quite often means Manchester stays totally dry.

If that chart does end up being accurate, that really is an "FML" moment for us Mancunians.

Dear oh dear. Couldn't make it up. Look at the size of the blob!

My sentiments exactly.....I paled when I saw that map.

Been indoors about a half hour. It's done a sneaky snow in that time. A light dusting on top of the car.

A roar of traffic all afternoon from the SSW, mostly Motorway, 10 miles away. The frontal system / precip is reflecting sound up here.

A needling little breeze picking up from the south-east.

Well of course at higher levels there is plenty of snow - the Lakes tends to get minimal amounts of snow, as in a cm or two, and this is what it will get in next 48 hours if lucky whilst many other parts get much much more.

In the late 2010 event, I was in Lakeland and we got a couple of inches of snowfall I was happy but when I found out back home in Grr Manc there was 8 inches in one of the greatest falls for many years I was gutted.

So in summary, yes the Lakes, Cumbria etc may get some snow but it will be nowhere near the amount everyone else gets.

I think you will find Lakeland has it's own microclimate aided by the mountains - had a climb up the gullies on Blencathra pencilled in only to find it not in condition - drove to Langdale 19 miles to do Bowfell via Great Slab route we were up to our knees in it...

Lost count of the times driving home to Lancashire from an Arctic wasteland to a dry barren snowless Fylde - good for the old folks to retire to I suppose :) - a bit like Grange over Sands...

Always look with envy when I see the fells topped out - will return back one day.

Ian

I hope to see this maintained on the next set of runs, the 12z GFS would do nicely here with persistent snow heavy at times from midday tomorrow until well into Saturday accompanied by gale force winds and gusts 50-55mph.... Dream on lol

Lets hope the GFS 12z is correct, because the graphics on the BBC are poor

PPN just about gets to the southern parts of the region, northen most around

Manchester

Far be it from me to question the BBC forecasts but I always find them quite infuriatingly neutral, they'll downplay any weather to middling until the event is upon is.

The deepest snow I've ever seen was when I was out hiking near Glenridding in March a few years ago, there was nothing at sea level but it was thigh deep above 500m! I've noticed Grasmere still has lying snow, so I'll head down there on Saturday if Keswick is still snowless.

12z is a nice upgrade for the North West but I fear it may be being a little too progressive. Would love it to go that way though it would bring lots more of us into play with appreciable snowfall.
