Time for the first major 'snow' spell of the winter, with forecasts going for snow from the west, north, east and maybe even south in the upcoming week, and with that in mind, it's time for a new thread just for the cold for those that say 'tar', 'pet', 'howay' and such colloquialisms.

Be nice, keep on topic and gawk at the lamppost. Previous thread here http://forum.netweather.tv/topic/75193-far-north-of-england-regional-discussion/

Very light snow this evening, but its not looking like giving more than a dusting. Tomorrow is marginal but we could see some pretty heavy snow if we stay on the right side of marginal. I'd go for Monday night / Tuesday as being the best bet for significant snow though when the wind veers NE'ly.

Latest GFS isn't great for here - most of the region seem to see more rain than snow tomorrow.

Any more positive spin on it?

The BBC, NAE, NMM, Met Office, ECM, UKMO disagree with it.

The light snow has stopped now. The NAE does show due points of 1C tomorrow, which suggests a frustrating day if wet snow.

Headline:

Very cold with snow and ice.

This Evening and Tonight:

Snow will extend across all areas, turning heavy for a time giving local significant falls. Snow clearing eastwards in the early hours but staying very cold with widespread icy conditions. Minimum temperature -4 °C.

Monday:

Icy with snow cover early on then further sleet and snow moving in during the morning, persisting throughout the day giving further snow accumulations for many. Staying cold. Maximum temperature 3 °C.

I don't see where any heavy snow can come from now, the front is on top of us and its barely producing any snow. There should be a spell of light snow before midnight as it clears. The heavier band was always going to be tomorrow I believe.

Graphics on the BBC site say all snow tomorrow for Durham, mostly sleet for Newcastle. This is going to be borderline.

They also however show 7 hrs of snow tonight so I wouldn't hold too much on them.

We're still 4 hours from when it was meant to intensify - seems to me like the main ppn for tonight is the heavier stuff behind the initial band, no?

1c/-1c at NCL- just need some precip.

Regarding tomorrow, definitely nowcasting, but dewpoints for Durham on the NAE keep at 0c or just under, whilst the GFS has them at 1c between 0300 and 1200. Looking at the ECM- that would be very, very marginal- and the UKMO is yet to update.

If you do get all snow tomorrow, then that is a very strong base for the convective snow shrs on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Let us know the UKMO update when it's it... I have a bad feeling about tomorrow TBH. So far Sat night's showers came to nothing, today has come to nothing... I'm spotting a pattern.
