Scotland Regional Discussion - January 12th 2013>

Recommended Posts

Welcome, here is a new thread to discuss your regional weather and local observations in bonnie Scotland…

The forum is extremely busy at the moment so you might have noticed one or two features including the member’s locations have been temporarily switched off to save resources on the servers, all you regular contributors in this region probably know where each other are located but it might help any newbys or visitors if you could add your location to your signature, it’s nice to know where everyone is especially when you are reporting snaw (for anyone not sure how to do this go to Edit Profile, Signature, Edit and Save).

Also this a very good time to think about getting the NW radar if you haven’t already got it, a one month subscription is just £3.49

Please try to keep the thread topical - Thank you good.gif

Latest FAX chart for the early hours of Monday - looks promising, current NAE gives us pretty much an all snow event if the above chart is to be believed, although I believe there's a possibility of moderation to sleet at points on Sunday evening before the front occludes. Monday looks more emphatic if it comes off as currently modelled though, cold air properly entrenched by that stage and two occlusions draped across the country:

Timings will change, however all charts point to snow. The lack of wind over these few days is going to be critical as well, because it is this which scuppers marginal snowfall, and with nothing coming from the North Sea either until when colder air moves in on Tuesday from the east any marginality is more likely to be overcome.

Anyway, currently dewpoints on the east coast range from around 0C to 3C, so not too bad given the uppers, and with the relatively slack flow this could work out in our favour tomorrow. I do feel that a slightly better westwards push of the cold uppers than currently modelled tomorrow would make things a lot easier on Sunday as well as tomorrow, and if we get that we won't have any issues with marginality, but at present I'm remaining vigilant to the possibility of low ground sleet on Sunday evening.

Does anyone think that if when the legendary SSW kicks in, we could do better than the all time minimum re temps?

http://www.metoffice...inimum_scotland

3rd time lucky?

*Safety Notice* - This is not in any way, shape or form, a ramp.

Depends on a lot of factors - firstly we need to get a good snow cover this weekend, then we need to get the lows to undercut and stay on the north side of the jet through the potentially less cold spell (if we do this it may in fact intensify the cold and snow) and then finally we need the last piece of the puzzle, the reload from the northeast, to really lock in the cold air for when the slackening of the flow occurs.

There are some amazing records there, like the -23.3C in mid November and the -13.3C in mid April. There's also something very statistically satisfying about the minimum temperature tie between all three winter months at exactly -27.2C.

Impressively low temperature here now, 0.7/-.6C, given NAE pegs us at 2-3C with DP at 2C. Could easily be snow here Orde thing tomorrow at this rate.

Temperature +1.4C/+1.0C (-0.2C/hour) so DP needs to get right down for these incoming showers to fall as snow.

I notice the showers are moving SE to NW and hitting land just North of Montrose. Need a wind direction change LSS.

That record is nothing to do with stats and everything to do with the thermometer only going down to -27.2ºC. I didn't just make that up, honest guv!

Morning folks! Temp down to 1.1 last night, now up to 2.3, no snow though, and i don't t think we'll see much up here anyhoo. We're just a wee bit too far west judging by what I've seen posted here. Shame, Skye looks so lovely when it's had a dump o' the white stuff.

Temp up to +2.1C/+1.7C (+0.2C/hour). Not Good!

Think will be nearer midday till the cold takes effect here HS hopefully see the dew point drop right down in a few hours....if not going to feel bitter in rainy showers and be an icy mess late tonight

From what I can make the GFS 00z was a good run but the ECM has decided to go it alone :( Such a shame as we had model agreement, hope rejoins the GFS/UKMT soon.

It was also a few people talked a out Sunday/Monday snow is downgraded but is that down south, sorry to ask all these questions is diffcult to weed out the rubbish in the MT :)
