Its been a very dry couple of months in the lake district. Réservoirs are i am led to believe about 80% full despite the very wet period between april and dec. Whilst we are à long way off the situation we were in this time last year, we could do with average rainfall in the next two months, so if we do manage a set summer we will be spared hosepipe bans etc, i dont normally hope for rain, but id sooner we Got it now than in two months time. Lengthy set spells in spring have become very common recently.

Indeed the above goes to show that despite all of last years rainfall droughts are not out the question for 2013 if this drier than average weather keeps up into the summer who knows it doesn't take long for Reservoirs to down

All the drier areas are in the north at the moment, at some point soon you would expect a n/s split with the north being wet and the south dry as is usual thus not coming close to drought anywhere.

An average March rainfall wise (only thing average about it weatherwise!). Most of the rain fell on the 14th-17th and again on the 22-23rd, with much of the rest of the month being somewhat drier.

January: 95.2mm (above average)

February: 43.1mm (below average)

March: 55.9mm (average)

2013 so far: 194.2mm

21 days into April and we've had just 3.6mm of rain so far.

The ground is now rock hard and cracked and nothing is growing. It certainly seems to be one extreme or the other recently!

April 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011 all had below 50% rainfall here and its looking possible 2013 may join that list.

50mm of rain here this April, half the average so far but time to catch up by month's end.

465mm so far for the year which is drier than average. Was drier this time last year though and then look what happened.

6.6 mm here so far and little sign of much more this week. Could be the driest since 2007. So far a year of complete contrasts. March opposite to March last year temp wise April opposite to last April rain-wise.

13.6 mm here so far this month so potential for April to enter the list of the 20 driest months on record.

Certainly a complete contrast to last April and another addition  to the increasing number of fluctuations from one extreme to the other which seem to have been a feature of the weather since about 2007.

Well, modelling suggests that we are going see out April with no major rainfall round here ( a few showers potentially indicated) so April will certainly be going down as a dry month and this soon after a second half of Feb which saw basically nothing.

No drought danger but with a stronger sun it may not be long until things start to get dusty.

Ground already dusty here and cracking up. Combined with the early cold it's going to be a hard time for the plants.

Another well below average April here with just 10.4mm of rain, only 21% of the average. 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013 have all had 43% of average rainfall or less. We seem to be in a period of mostly very dry Aprils.

Jan: 48.8mm (87%)

Feb: 30.8mm (72%)

Mar: 51.4mm (107%)

Apr: 10.4mm (21%)

2013 so far: 141.4mm (72%)

2011 at this point had 104.2mm of rain.

Similar here, well below average, though March was fairly normal, and Jan/Feb seemed wet from the end of last year.

Well below average for April here just 17mm out of an average of 41.5mm

106mm for the year

Based on the 1981-2010 averages we should have 151.8mm so we are well below average currently
