Perth hits 42.1C today, but relief is finally on the way

PERTH has capped off 2012 with the hottest day of the year as the mercury tipped 42.1C late this afternoon.

It was easily the hottest day of the week-long heatwave and the equal warmest day of the year, with January 28, when the temperature also peaked at 42.1C. But relief is in sight with 34C tipped for New Year's Day and a cool 27C on Wednesday. The temperature dipped to 20.9C at 5.08am overnight after yesterday's high of 37.5C, which came around 10.30am, before a strong north-westerly wind cooled the city and prevented it reaching the expected 41C. By 8.30am today the temperature had already raced to 33C in the city, heading toward the expected 39C top. As the temperature in the city reached a blistering 41.6C at 1.22pm today, the winds swung around the south-west but a cool change did not eventuate.

It hovered around the 41C mark until just after 4pm before the sea breeze finally began taking effect. Scorching heat was felt all over the metro area - Jandakot also hit 41, while Perth Airport reached 42.2C as most areas endured 39C-41C temperatures. Just east of the city, Pearce topped out at 42.7 and Gingin hit 41.5C, while in Geraldton it was a stifling 43.9C at 12noon - the hottest spot in WA.

Seriously cold in China SHANGHAI: Temperatures in China have plunged to their lowest in almost three decades, cold enough to freeze coastal waters and trap 1,000 ships in ice, official media said at the weekend.

Since late November the country has shivered at an average of minus 3.8 degrees celsius, 1.3 degrees colder than the previous average, and the chilliest in 28 years, state news agency Xinhua said on Saturday, citing the China meteorological administration.

Bitter cold has even frozen the sea in Laizhou Bay on the coast of Shandong province in the east, stranding nearly 1,000 ships, the China Daily newspaper reported.

Zheng Dong, chief meteorologist at the Yantai Marine Environment Monitoring Center under the state oceanic administration, told the paper that the area under ice in Laizhou Bay was 291 square km this week.

Transport around the country has been severely disrupted. Over 140 flights from the state capital airport in central Hunan province were delayed, while heavy snowfall forced the closure of some sections of the Beijing-Hong Kong-Macau Expressway, the China Daily said.

Temperatures in the northeast fell even further, reaching a 43-year low of minus 15.3 degrees celsius, about 3.7 degrees below the previous recorded average.

I reminds me a week in Athens, in 2007, when we had 47 degrees during noon - midday and 42 degrees during night... I had cold shower every 30 minutes...

Pretty bad out there:

Ukraine army tackles snow chaos amid Kiev emergency

Armoured personnel carriers are being used in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, to drag buses and other vehicles out of snowdrifts, amid a state of emergency. The authorities say the normal monthly level of snow fell in just 24 hours.

The blizzard conditions caused power cuts in about 600 towns and villages across Ukraine at the weekend. Hundreds of soldiers are helping Kiev's citizens to dig out cars buried in snow and the city is struggling to get public transport moving again. A state of emergency was declared on Saturday, as some 50cm (20in) of snow blanketed Kiev.

Most of the country's newspapers failed to appear on Monday, BBC Monitoring reports. Ukraine is expected to remain gripped by severe weather for the next few days. The worst affected regions are Kiev, Ternopil, Rivne, Volyn and Khmelnytsky.
