What a difference a day makes ..
After the Beast from the East bitter gales and the snow .. today feels like Spring.
No wind and lots of pleasant sunshine.
And look who is making an early start on last years nest next door ..
Just taken this pic to show you.
A high security nest too  ;)

The sad effects of the recent severe weather, the Beast from the East and Storm Emma.
Many thousands of sea creatures washed up on beaches near me in E. Yorks.

Return of pine martens could save Britain's red squirrels, say scientists

Areas with growing pine marten populations have seen grey squirrel numbers fall as they provide easy prey for the predators – unlike native reds, a new study shows

Fewer monarch butterflies made it to Mexico again this year

Quote

The number of monarch butterflies wintering in Mexican forests declined for a second consecutive year, a government official said Monday.

Alejandro Del Mazo, Mexico's commissioner for protected areas, said the monarchs clumped in trees covering about 2.48 hectares (6.12 acres) this winter. That was down about 14.7 per cent from the 2.91 hectares (7.19 acres) the previous winter.

The monarch butterflies' migration is measured by the area they cover in pine and fir forests west of Mexico City. Millions of the butterflies make the  5,500-kilometre (3,400-mile) migration from the United States and Canada each year.

Jorge Rickards, director of the World Wildlife Fund in Mexico, which participated in the annual study, said a particularly busy hurricane season across the insects' migration route could have been a factor.

In Montrose again today, with a little more attention to camera settings.

The Kingfisher was back on her perch, but I think she will be off up the river S Esk soon to her breeding territory.

The Little Egret on view was a bonus.

Had a walk in Glen Clova this afternoon and returned home via Glen Prosen.  It was darned cold  -3-4C, but mostly sunny.

Unidentified bird of prey, pretty distant but identification would be appreciated.

A Blackcap has been visiting the garden on and off over the last week and there was a fair bit of excitement a couple of days ago when a Hoopoe was spotted at St Buryan

Spent a relaxing hour or so at Montrose Basin yesterday afternoon. It was a bit breezy, rippling the water in the ponds, and so the Kingfisher preferred hovering over the water to perching on the edge of the pond.

The best pic I could manage.

Some Wigeons from last week - they were still around yesterdaybut will be preparing to fly north soon.

Apart from the above there were around 30 Mallards, a few Teal, numerous Eiders and a Bullfinch in the trees in the carpark

Or, as it's more popularly known, north of the border - a Sassenach's Eagle!:D

Guilty as charged.

Thanks, Polar. I agree. Must improve my ID skill. :)

I had, after eventually eliminating harrier, decided  it was a "Scottish" eagle - I never considered it was a golden, the bird was clearly too small. It flew off having had a scrap with one larger and two smaller BoPs, but I had lost sight of the others which either had gone to ground or disappeared over the ridge.

I decided to spark up the pond today. Cleaned all of the filters, netted loads of leaves etc.. then spotted two frogs at it - absolutely tons of spawn! I'll move it to nature pond I have, as the Koi will eat it. Hopefully it'll be 3 years in a row of a decent spawning that turned in to hundreds of frogs. :)
