Ramblers warned of new parasite threat from ticks

Quote

Hikers have been urged to protect themselves after ticks carrying a parasite that causes a malaria-like disease were found in the UK for the first time.

Researchers detected the organism Babesia venatorum in sheep in northeast Scotland; a world first as it had only been seen in deer, cattle and rodents. Ramblers have been urged to use repellents and not leave skin uncovered.

It comes weeks after scientists found ticks carrying the encephalitis virus, a potentially fatal brain disease, on deer in Britain for the first time.

Researchers at the University of Glasgow believe that Babesia venatorum may have been carried to Scotland by migratory birds arriving from Scandinavia. Alexander Gray, a clinician in veterinary pathology, said he was surprised to find the parasite in two separate flocks.

The disease, whose symptoms include fatigue, joint and muscle pain and raised temperature, can be transmitted to humans via ticks. Babesia venatorum is treatable if identified.

A rather fine Peacock butterfly basking in the December sunshine just now.
Perhaps searching for a hibernation place ?

I just did a status update but thought it really deserved to go here.

A house just down the road has Forsythia in full bloom and I heard my first cuckoo today...

Bizarre, even for here in the middle of France...

A Kingfisher and Little Egret showed well, but couple of poor distant shots taken through glass at the visitor centre.

Deep-sea coral gardens discovered in the submarine canyons off south Western Australia

Quote

Bremer Canyon Marine Park is already known as a biodiversity hotspot for marine species such as whales and dolphins, however, a recent expedition focused on the deep sea has now revealed rich and diverse ecosystems inhabiting the cold waters deep within the canyon. Led by researchers from the University of Western Australia (UWA), these discoveries were only made possible by the philanthropic Schmidt Ocean Institute's (SOI) deep-sea remotely operated vehicle, SuBastian, which is capable of sampling depths to 4,500 meters.

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall.
