Storm warning: Britain braced for week of hellish weather

BRITAIN faces a week of misery as strong winds and heavy showers batter the country.

The fierce storms are expected to crash in from the Atlantic from today. Temperatures will be higher than average at 19C (66F) in the south. But it will stay foggy in many parts. Coastal regions are due to take the brunt with many on flood alert. Weather experts blame a series of low pressure systems drawing warmer, moist air in from the continent. Forecaster Dan Williams, of the Met Office, said the heaviest showers will be in the west and south-west although most places will see rain.

He added: “There could be some rain across many parts of the country today and Friday. Showers will be fairly persistent.†The grim prediction comes after parts of the country have already been hit by heavy downpours, floods and traffic misery. Fog played havoc with royal engagements yesterday.

The latest GFS run has offered potential for next Monday again along with MSW. Little agreement from the ECM output however.

Just looking ahead to next Tue on this chart...

GFS Jet / SLP:

Potentially stormy across far Northern UK early next week, need to keep watch of the possible interactions for severe weather.

Before that though a line of developing potentially deep low pressures from the Atlantic, first one arriving through Friday 1st Nov. At least three potentially severe systems this weekend and early next week, these look as though there head into S-UK(could track more north)  The risk for S-UK is heavy rain and flooding with possible gales or severe gales along the coasts and a risk of inland gales, of course there is the risk of severe gales developing inland too but at this stage the coastal zones main risk from this this weekend. I see a chance of some lighting and thunder too.

Low pressure is coming down from the North on Wednesday bringing very high wind speeds.

Wednesday 12am Average speeds across Western Scotland reaching 48 to 56mph,

post-6686-0-04177400-1384792650_thumb.pn

Later on in the morning between 9am and 12pm, 48 to 52mph average wind speeds across Northern parts of the UK and average speeds over 60mph to the far North of Scotland,

post-6686-0-50462500-1384792749_thumb.pn

By 6pm the winds move more inland and down South and stay very strong,

With these strong winds from the North it will be highly like for the Scottish Highlands to see snow,

Yes this ones slipped under the radar due to everyone looking into FI for massive cold. Could be a nasty day over all.

Yep and 70mph gusts are possible the Met Office have a warning out for Western and Northern Scotland,

The north or northwesterly winds will increase during the early hours of Wednesday, with gusts perhaps reaching 70 mph in places.

The public should be aware that the winds are likely to be strong enough to cause some local disruption to travel, and possible some minor structural damage to buildings. The winds will slowly moderate from the west during Wednesday evening.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

A deep area of low pressure is expected to develop near Iceland on Tuesday and then move south eastwards towards the northern North Sea on Wednesday. This will bring strong winds, especially so within the north to north westerly flow on its rearward flank.

It will be interesting to see what effect Melissa has on our weather patterns at the tail end of the week also, this could shift the block somewhat if the track is to the East of the model guidance.

I think a lot of this is to do with the fact that this will be mainly affecting coastal areas.

There is a warning out for 70mph gusts just recently, but that will only be for very exposed areas and most places in the warning area will more likely have 40-50mph gusts instead.

The latest BBC forecast at 12:00PM today only mentioned 60mph gusts for exposed areas of Scotland so I can only assume that the winds have recently been downgraded a bit.

A forecast of '60mph gusts for exposed areas' would usually equate to 40-45mph for lower less exposed places, and these sort of speeds are seen every year even for us down the south.

It won't really be anything noteworthy for Scotland, as they tend to get more gales then southern areas anyway. The snow and cold risk is the thing to be more concerned about.

GFS has downgraded them slightly although the warning page still has them up 70 mph. Shetland has been removed and eastern regions brought into the warning area.

Indeed, some warnings I've read that have been issued today are mentioning 80-90mph gusts a possibility for some locations. Potentially noteworthy wind event for Thursday, expect some amber and maybe even red warnings to be issued during Wednesday.

Yep, Met Office is forecasting 60mph gusts for Rochdale on Thursday, not something we see every day, or even every year...

Just looked at the latest GFS. Wow a proper storm. Not seen anything like that so close tot he time for a long time. If it verifies red warnings may well be on the way.

Aye, I think all this cold snap chasing has distracted people from what could be quite a dramatic event for a good portion of the country

I'm quite surprised how far inland the sustained wind and gusts get:

Gusts now look at peaking around 140km/hr (87mph) out in the North Sea if GFS is right:
