Quite a windy start to the day here gusts to 64 mph and no warnings for the area. Early forecast just briefly mentioned up to 60 mph. Well if we're getting 64 higher regions will be getting much more.

SKYWARN UK HAS ISSUED A SEVERE WEATHER WARNING FOR THE FOLLOWING REGIONS:

WESTERN SCOTLAND NORTHERN SCOTLAND OUTER HEBRIDES NORTHERN ISLANDS

IN EFFECT UNTIL 0600UTC TUESDAY 5TH FEBRUARY 2013

VERY DEEP LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM TRANSITING EAST CLOSE TO NORTHERN UK, GENERATING A VERY STRONG GRADIENT AND COLD AIR ADVECTION

SEVERE WEATHER IS EXPECTED IMMINENTLY, OR OCCURRING, SOMEWHERE WITHIN THE REGIONS INDICATED. THREATS WITHIN THIS WARNING INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

SEVERE GALES...STRONG GUSTS...DAMAGING GUSTS...HEAVY SNOW...BLIZZARDS

DISCUSSION:

THERE IS EXCELLENT MODEL AND PARTNER AGENCY CONFIDENCE OF A SEVERE WEATHER RISK THROUGH MONDAY. AS A LOW DEEPENS TO SUB-960MB CLOSE TO THE NORTH, A STRONG PRESSURE GRADIENT AND A WIDE AREA OF GALE FORCE WINDS WILL BE ADVECTED INTO THE NORTHWEST QUARTER. MEAN WINDSPEEDS ABOVE 50MPH ARE EXPECTED, WITH GUSTS ABOVE 70MPH AND POSSIBLY EXCEEDING 80MPH EVEN AT LOW LEVELS OWING TO EXPOSURE AND LEE EFFECTS. THESE WINDS ARE POTENTIALLY DAMAGING, AND OVER HIGH GROUND WILL BE DANGEROUS. THE COLD POST-FRONTAL MARITIME AIRMASS WILL GENERATE SUCCESSIVE SHOWERS WHICH WILL READILY TURN TO SNOW AWAY FROM COASTS AND OVER HIGH GROUND, LEADING TO BLIZZARD CONDITIONS AND POSSIBLE ACCUMULATIONS OF BETWEEN 5CM AT LOW LEVELS TO POSSIBLY EXCEEDING 20CM ABOVE 400M, ESPECIALLY WHERE DRIFTING OCCURS. NEIGHBOURING AREAS MAY SEE GUSTS EXCEED 70MPH BUT THE RISK IS EXPECTED TO BE CONFINED TO THE WARNING AREAS AT LEAST UNTIL TUESDAY MORNING. THIS WARNING MAY BE UPDATED OR UPGRADED. Hell it's windy now! Just rescued a neighbour who was trying to get some rubbish into the bin outside, she was clinging onto her house drainpipe to stop herself being blown over, safely back inside now.

Recording gusts between 60-65mph at the front of the house with my anemometer.

windy here, a gust to 49mph in my back garden which is one of the highest I've seen with the extreme shelter I get, RH Airport up to 58mph, so a very windy day for these parts

Wonder how high it actually goes within that large 48ft+ area?!

If you look at the world view you can see there is nothing else in the world that comes close in terms of swell height at present.

Not taking this literally yet of course still over a week away, but if this were to come off, I could see a few problems. Very closely packed Isobars up there. Doesn't look like any other model is seeing this though.

Peak gusts so far today with quite a number of low level stations recording 70mph or higher. Certainly the windiest day of the winter here on the Cumbrian coast, for now anyway.

Scientists at Lews Castle College UHI have been measuring what they described as "extreme" wave heights in the sea off west Lewis.

Arne Vogler, a senior research engineer and principle investigator at the Hebridean Marine Energy Futures project, said hurricane force gusts had also been recorded.

He said extreme wave heights with averages of 14m (45ft) and maximum waves of 23m (75.5ft) had been recorded.

Wow more than a month ago was the last post just shows that not much has happened.

This Sunday looks interest okay not actually an Atlantic storm but here on the pressure map we have a weak low over the UK and high pressure building over our North West around Greenland and Iceland,

Doesn't look all that bad but where the isobars are tight that's where the strongest winds will be during the early hours of Sunday morning,

45 to 55mph average speeds and gusts around 60 to 70mph for Western and Northern Scotland,

This is less than 72 hours away so likely to happen and needs to be watched.

9am Tuesday the low is sitting just to the West of the UK the high winds start to batter Ireland and South Western Scotland

Pity they didn't do it for Sunday around lunch time we were averaging force 7. Top gust 56 mph Pretty sure I saw 70 mph on XCweather somewhere on the North East Coast.

Well there's a warning out for us for winds up to 65 mph. Also effecting most of Northern England and Southern Scotland.

Could be quite a wild night, gusts already topping 60 mph, and it's not supposed to reach the strongest winds for another six or seven hours.

Pretty similar to Sunday. Averaging F7 gusts slightly higher at 59 mph so far.

Top gusts yesterday from Met Office stations in their regions,

1. 84mph Northern Wales.

2. 71mph Northern England.

3. 67mph Southern Ireland.

4. 61mph Southern Scotland.

5. 56mph Southern Wales.

Must note the winds for today, an unusual development for June with an Atlantic feature creating a tight pressure gradient across Southern England with very very gusty strong and potentially damaging winds across South UK today (Thursday)

1) 13/6 - Surface pressure UKMO 12z

Low pressure to the north high pressure to the south over France.

 

2) 13/6 Wind gust 10m Knots - GFS 18z

The orange area shown on this chart is where we can expect the very strong wind zone through Thursday(today)

 

 

 

Images 3 and 4) for 13/6 -  Cloud cover NAE 18z these charts showing some thinning cloud with some cloud breaks and sunshine across South UK, not much rainfall showing across the South today(at this stage) from (south of a line) SW England -East Anglia, maybe showers.(grey area = thinner cloud)

 

 

NAE precipitation 18z - mostly dry across the South. Keep check on the convective thread.. as shown on ppn charts some activity(ppn)for Central/Northen areas maybe thunderstorms here.

 

South UK - potentially gales or severe gales, trees are in full leaf more so than a few weeks ago when we had some rough windy spells, 40-50mph generally maybe more in places.

From my experience in these situations the winds would be long continuous gusts.

 

Also watch out for possible very strong convective gusts further North in any convective showers or storms.

Interesting although mentioned yesterday evening nothing mentioned on this mornings forecast bar humdingers and gusty round showers which you'd expect round thundery showers anyway. XCweather shows nothing going on at the moment and the wind for the south west is supposed to be at it's strongest now then declining from 10 onwards.

I suspect their thinking is linked to the large pressure rise to the immediate rear of the trough being the reason for gusts of 40-50mph they are quoting and for it to be on a widish areal base rather than just close by marked showers or thunderstorms. This will tighten the gradient for a time before it relaxes again later as the effects of this pressure change move away NE?

sorry ESS gusts do not last long. Indeed it is the rapid variation from mean to gust speed and back again that causes the damage, be it to trees or roofs. Rapid changes in pressure along with the variations in force per unit area if that makes sense?

The general mean speed I was meant to say I think to be more accurate. I was on about more of the feel of wind rather than anything technical.

I understand what you are explaining though.

Nothing majour I know but it does look to be quite windy tomorrow especially for the time of year.

 

30-40mph gusts widely inland and probably up to 50mph in some exposed areas along with heavy rain.

 

Certainly going to be the windiest its been since June in many areas.
