Its now mid-month and after just 16 days we've had around 64 hours of sunshine here, which is already 123% of what would be expected in the entire month. Its now quite possible it could end up the sunniest of the last decade.

However December has become somewhat of a standout month sunshine-wise in recent years. Figures for this location:

2001: 65 hrs (138%)

2003: 64 hrs (136%)

2004: 67 hrs (143%)

2005: 75 hrs (160%)

2006: 64 hrs (136%)

2008: 64 hrs (136%)

2009: 82 hrs (174%)

2010: 65 hrs (138%)

2011: 73 hrs (140%)

Only 2002 and 2007 saw below average sunshine.

Has your area seen similar?

A sunny month here too, although not as sunny as your location. The total for the first 16 days is 45.0hrs, 5.3 hrs short of the average for the whole month for the 1981-2010 period.

The second half of the month will have to be almost as sunny as the first if we're to beat 2001 which holds the record at 81.4 hrs.

Have no idea where I can find sunshine hours but this month has been a fairly bright one even during the "cold spell" it was sunny apart from a few days where we had frequent snow showers

Consistently sunny here with very few cloudy spells which I really notice in our south facing office - my 'solar shield' (bits of card stuck in strategic locations to stop blindness) are having their work cut out!

We must be close to beating the June sunshine totals which would be exceptional given that the sun is above the horizon for around twice as many hours in June compared to December.

Last winter was very sunny too - what is it with our sunny winters & dull summers lately - really is the wrong way round!

I know our weather patterns have gone the wrong way round lately its drier than normal and sunny winters followed by wetter than average and dull summers

That is a definite possibility and possibly unprecedented if it happens. 19 hours more sunshine needed here to beat the June total of 63.74 hrs.

The stats for Durham University have been similar:

http://www.geography...66/Default.aspx

All Decembers from 2001 onwards were significantly sunnier than average at Durham, too, apart from 2002 and 2007. Prior to the "noughties" December 1999 had been exceptionally sunny and December 2000 slightly above average, though there were many duller Decembers prior to 1999. The length of the recent run of sunny Decembers in many parts of the country has been really remarkable.

Some parts of north-eastern Britain had more sunshine in December 2006 and/or January 2007 than in June 2007, so we have seen remarkable "winter vs. summer stats" like this quite recently. In 2008 many parts of the country had more sunshine in February than in August.

51 hours here, so going by current averages, it will end up with just under 100 hours of sun, smashing June and April, as well as January and February.

June had 72 hours here, November had 71 - if anything it just shows how incredibly dull June was - people say our weather is boring, but we certainly do excel in cloud.. lol

Some northeastern areas (such as Aberdeen) were duller in June 2007 than the previous December. This year not only does it look like occurring in the same year but it's also going to be much more widespread.

For sunshine totals, the first half of summer this year was phenomenally bad. My jaw still hits the floor when I recall the fact that Edinburgh was stuck with under two hours of sunshine in July until about the 12th or 13th!

Well after 64 hours in the first 16 days the next 13 days have only recorded 7 hours of sunshine!

It has been pretty miserable, heres hoping we get some clear, cold and dry air back soon.

58 hours here - very sunny start, but it has been very cloudy recently. Oh well.

Much the same here. I recorded 43.4 hrs in the first 13 days of December but since then only 11.6 hrs. At one point I thought it might challenge 2001 as the sunniest on record but now it looks very unlikely to reach the 59 hrs recorded in 2010.
