A cloudy start to last night with a few flakes of snow. Most of the cloud cleared by mid-evening and the rest of the night was mainly clear with shallow fog patches developing in the valleys by the early hours, thickening considerably after 0630.

A subtle change in the distribution of fog this morning. Yesterday south west facing slopes had the most persistent fog but this morning, with a light easterly drift, it's the turn of east facing slopes , the fog level up to 320 m at times but mostly below 300m.

The consequence of this is the screen minimum in my back garden, and the sensor on the house roof are both slightly higher than yesterday but the screen minimum 20 m higher on the moor is slightly lower.

Currently dry and foggy but with clear sky visible above the fog and the sun shining above 340 m.

This has to be one of the coldest spells without snow I've ever seen. I haven't got my exact reading but it is certainly anywhere between -5 to -7 C for the low. Up there with 2009 and 2001

We are usually 2 to 3 C warmer than Chester but last night we started colder so it could, in theory have been lower than -7C but I doubt it
