Thought I'd set up a non-weather satellite imagery thread. I'm doing a masters in remote sensing, so I'm sure I'll come across some interesting pics during the year!

To start off with, here's an image of Dubai, taken by the French Pleiades satellite, which is capable of taking panchromatic (black and white) images down to a resoltion of 70cm.

A short video clip by the ESA on this image, which does some interesting videos on different satellite images weekly.

I have a bad habit of downloading MODIS images and using them as additional screensaver pics.

Hi Coast!

The big 'Splash' one, you can see ripples for quite a distance around the 'splash'?

Would the central splash not have subsided by the time the outer rings of ripples had travelled that far from the impact???

In case anyone was curious, the country was Denmark.

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
