Frost Watch Autumn 2012

Air frost here last night, frost on the grass this morning. Lovely day yesterday and another nice one today.

First air frost of the Autumn here in East Staffs this morning, dipped below freezing at 04:30ish and reached -0.75c at 08:00 before zooming up above freezing by 08:45.

Currently 9.25c

Breeze 3-5mph West 265 degrees

Air Pressure 1000.25 hpa steady

Here in Glasgow it's down to 2/3C but with incoming cloud cover and I expect that temperatures shouldn't drop too much - the coldest temperature of the season so far is -3C, but If it hadn't been for that front then tomorrow morning could have had the coldest temperature so far.

But further north, it should stay dry, calm, clear and cold tonight with some low temperatures already:

Braemar: -2.9C

Tyndrum: -2.6C

Tulloch Bridge: -2.0C

Aviemore: -1.3C

Loch Glascarnoch: -1.0C

Aboyne: -1.0C

Should get close to -5C at one or two stations, with at least 10 more hours until the minimum temperature reach, how low can it go?

The record for October is -11.7C, very unlikely for that record to be challenged tonight but it'll be interesting to see how far away from the record the minimum gets tonight.

Temperature in Glasgow already on the rise slightly, still, 2C is fine for an October night.

Here are some of the readings at other sites in Scotland at 10pm:

Braemar: -3.5C

Tyndrum: -2.6C

Tulloch Bridge: -2.4C

Aviemore: -2.0C

Aboyne: -1.9C

I think we've already had -5.0C recorded at a site so far this season, but how about a look at the first sub -5C of a few past seasons.

2011/12: -5.1C, 6th November, Braemar

2010/11: -5.0C, 20th October, Tyndrum

2009/10: -7.3C, 7th November, Braemar

2008/09: -6.6C, 29th October, Topcliffe

Probably wont see a frost here in Plymouth till after Christmas...Been here five years nearly and can count the amount of times i have had to defrost my car on one hand. I do miss the sticks sometimes.

Thankfully no repeat of last years diabolical frost free horror of an autumn as we have the first air frost of the season with the temp down to -0.4C already

With the last frost having been on 20th May this will be the first year in over a decade with a shorter than average frost-free season here.
