Here’s a list of some data sources people may be interested in.

First off, the Arctic Sea Ice Graphs page.

This has loads of graphs, images and charts from different groups and individuals. It will have most sea ice measures you’ll need, as well as some Arctic weather and ocean data and links to much more info, some which will appear below. https://sites.google...icseaicegraphs/

The main sea ice monitoring pages are here. They will often have links to other data, and some numbers available to download so you can do your own analysis.

This updates daily and goes back to March 2009. Is composed of numerous images taken from passes of the AQUA and TERRA satellites, which are then stitched together to generate 2 whole Arctic images daily. http://rapidfire.sci...12256.terra.4km

MODIS Composite

Coming from the MODIS mosaic imagery, the Canadian Ice Service combine 7 days worth of mosaic images to create a composite chart. Very handy for seeing through the clouds! http://ice-glaces.ec...=10110&Lang=eng

An overview on the week just passed.

(I'll continue to use the NSIDC extent for this as it's more consistent than the IJIS data)

The NSIDC extent has continued to fall, and the 1 day mean is now 792,000km2 below the previous minimum, with the 5 day mean now 633,000km2 below the 2007 record. The current daily anomaly with regards the 79-11 average is now at ~2,927,000km2.

The average daily change over the last week was about -15,600km2/day, compared to the 79-11 average of -1,300km2.

post-6901-0-46037500-1347911168_thumb.gi

The long term average daily change for the next 7 days is around +24,800km2/day. So unless we begin to see a turn around soon, the anomaly may climb over 3 million km2 during the next week.

Latest update based on the NSIDC extent.

The extent began it's annual climb again this week. The current 1 day extent is now at 3,651,300km2, while the 5 day mean is 3,576.000km2

The current daily anomaly is now down to 2,818,000km2, up from 2,927,000km2 last week, and we're 552,400km2 below the next lowest year on record, 2007.

The average daily increase has been about 40.4k/day over the last week, well ahead of the typical increase for the time of year of 24.8k/day.

The average daily increase for the next week is 51k/day, so something to watch.

A quick review of September.

This year set new record lows for the:

1 day extent = 3,368,600km2 (previous low was 4,160,700km2)

5 day mean extent = 3,412,200km2 (previous low was 4,170,400km2)

Monthly mean extent = 3,578,900km2 (previous low was 4,280,500km2)

Every day in September was a new daily low record. This means that every day since July 27th has been a new record low for Arctic sea ice extent, which is 66 consecutive days and counting.

The daily minimum was 2,903,000km2 lower than the 79-11 average, while the monthly mean was 2,837,000km2 lower than the 79-11 average.

post-6901-0-90862100-1349115700_thumb.jp

As for the past week, the average daily extent increase has been 39.7K/day, compared to the 79-11 average of 51k/day. This means that as of the 30th of September, we are now 2,896,600km2, so further from average than we were at the minimum.

The average daily increase for the next week is 86.8k/day, so if the extent doesn't start increasing rapidly, we may pass the 3 million km2 anomaly for the first time.

The past week of NSIDC extent data.

The current 1 day extent is 4,439,950km2, while the 5 day mean is 4,256,000km2. We are now 481,200km2 off the next lowest year on record, 2007.

The average daily increase this past week has been 73k/day, so slightly lower than the long term average of 86.8k/day. This masks a strong growth increase during the week, with the last 2 days having averaged just over 100k.

This hasn't been enough to prevent the anomaly from climbing to over 3 million km2 though, with the highest anomaly being 3.06million on the 5th, and currently 3.02 million on the 7th.

The average growth rate over the next week is 96.5k/day

October, week 2 update.

The current 1 day extent is 5,335,170, while the 5 day mean is on 5,033,500.

The daily anomaly (compared to 79-11) has reduced to 2,801,000km2, down from just over 3 million last week. We're currently just 72,500km2 off the next lowest year on record, 2007.

The average daily increase over the last 7 days has been about 128k/day, compared to the long term average of 96.5k/day.

The average daily increase for the next week is 89.3k/day, so a chance so really close in on the average.

Update for week 3 of October

The current 1 day extent is 6,706,630km2, while the 5 day mean is on 6,329,300km2

.

The daily anomaly (compared to 79-11) has reduced to 2,055,000km2, down from just over 2.8 million last week. We're currently 257k ahead of 2007 and 98k ahead of 2011

The average daily increase over the last 7 days has been about 196k/day, compared to the long term average of 89.3k/day.

This week we've ended our run of consecutive record low daily extents, which spanned 81 days, from July 27th to October 15th

The average daily increase for the next week is 84.3k/day, so a chance to get within 1.5 million of average if we continue with strong gains.

Week 4 of October.

The current 1 day extent is 7,438,870km2, while the 5 day mean is on 7,342,200km2

The daily anomaly (compared to 79-11) has reduced to 1,913,100km2, down from just over 2 million last week. We're currently lowest on record again though, 712k behind 2011 and 403k behind 2007.

The average daily increase over the last 7 days has been about 104.6k/day, compared to the long term average of 84.3k/day. But well below the 2007 and 2011 averages of 203k/day and 220k/day respectively.

The average increase over the next week is 84.6k/day, so we should at least continue to close in on the average mark.

Latest weekly update, up to November 4th.

The current 1 day extent is 8,298,010km2 while the 5 day mean is on 8,144,100km2

The daily anomaly (compared to 79-11) has reduced to 1,646,200km2, down from just over 1.9 million last week. We're currently lowest on record still, 521,100km2 behind the next lowest on record, 2009.

The average daily increase over the last 7 days has been about 120.1k/day, compared to the long term average of 84.6k/day. But well below the 2007 and 2011 averages of 146k/day and 132k/day respectively.

The average increase over the next week is 60.3k/day, while the average of the last 5 years is 70.5k/day, so hopefully we'll be within 1.5 million of the average mark next week.

BF, do you know of any sites that supply maps showing 'new' ice like the Met Office used to do by fax (years ago...)? I can find plenty of concentration maps but none that indicate when ice is being formed.

Not too sure. Do you mean maps showing ice age and type? http://www.aari.ru/o...1&mod=0&yy=2011

Thickness can give a rough indication of how old the ice is too.

Or something else? Have you any examples of the old Met Office maps?

They used to do a map where new ice was indicated by '*' dotted around. So, for example, when ice was forming in the 'Odden' it was easy to tell. And, when I was younger, it was a bit like looking for snow but you looked instead for the first report of new ice...

Bit like this Baltic map but for the Arctic.

Interesting, bookmarked and noted, but not quite what I was talking about. Those charts show where ice is, what it's concentration is but not (I think - I'm not sure of the Key to some of them) new ice - like the Baltic chart I linked to does.

I just used to find it interesting to see days when much new ice formed.
