The town of Youghal in Co Cork had a rude awakening on February 13th, 1995.

Just after 7 a.m. there was a very heavy shower of hail, which in turn spawned a small tornado, about 10 feet in diameter, which swept right through the centre of the town. Small it may have been, but it did its share of damage.

An interesting read.

The author, John Tyrrell, was my meteorology lecturer in 1st year in Uni.

Cobh, another smal town about 25 miles away from Youghal had an impressive looking storm this year during the Titanic 100 year anniversary event

A particularly well documented tornado occurred in Youghal on August 8th 1967. Unfortunately the only article I can find on it is with Highbeam Research so no access.

The Irish Times has an article on the 1995 event on the tenth anniverary but you have to subscribe and it's not cheap.

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
