August 2012 Summaries & Statistics

Recommended Posts

Ill kick this one off...

This August was characterized by more warmth than previous summers. However the warmth was consistent, and not especially outstanding, this is reflected in the figures. A few records broken too, which was surprising. Daily rainfall has beaten the all time record, I suspect not only in my records but in the entire series, locally. Monthly rainfall wiped away my previous rainfall from any August gone by. The 8.8C recorded on the last day of the month, represents the coolest August night in my record series.. which in raw data goes back more than 10 years. Overall cooler than many other places, and a signal of the setup which was often a divide between northwest and southeast.

Surprisingly this August was not quite the wettest or coolest in the last 5 years, however nearly 1/3 of the rain came on the 29th while the consistent 14c-17c minimums helped the mean temperature more than any run of high maximums - only 3 days exceeded 26c!

For Warminster, Wiltshire ...

Average max = 21.20c (Highest = 27.9c on 10th)

Average min = 14.38c (Lowest = 7.9c on 31st)

Mean = 17.79c

Dry days = 9

Rain days = 22

Rainfall = 113.5mm

Summary

Not a bad month, just a touch above average rain, above average temperatures, some muggy nights and daytime values well above normal, 23 days of 21C or more and 12 over 24C with 8 of these on consecutive days-okay my back garden is very sheltered but it’s a rare event in the last 12 years for this to happen

Temperatures in degrees C and long term averages in brackets-I will eventually get round to doing the last 30 years!!

Mean Temperature=17.7(16.0)

Avge Max=22.5(20.eight) highest daytime=26.6 on 19th and warmest night=18th with 16.7C

1 day of thunder, no lightning, 2 events close by with a tree split open in a park 3 miles away(one of the joys of being deaf=why my thunder days get less!)

No fog, snow, frost

Hobart is Tasmania's capital city, situated at sealevel and backed by a 1270m/4200ft mountain range. Climate is temperate with a maritime influence.

August - Last month of winter

After a quiet June and July dominated by high pressure ridging, August brought a shift to a more usual westerly wind regime with the passage of more regular cold fronts, but without the wintry intensity often observed at the backend of winter. The most significant front however gave a light covering of snow to Hobart's hillier suburbs ( 200m/650ft ), an event which will only happen once or twice a year. Very quickly afterwards a very mild spell developed, which produced the earliest 20C+ this side of the year in 27 years, and a rare complete snowmelt all the way to the top of Hobart's 1270m mountain summit.

The monthly average temperature almost equalled the 1981-2010 average, these are the warmest decades on record in the capital.

Average maximum: 13.8 ( +0.1 )

Average minimum: 5.7 ( -- )

Rainfall: 58mm ( Average 54mm )

Daily temperature extremes this August

Highest maximum: 20.3 ( Record 24.5 in 1977 )

Lowest maximum: 9.0 ( Record 5.5 in 1974 )

Highest minimum: 10.6 ( Record 15.0 in 2005 )

Lowest minimum: 1.9 ( Record -1.8 in 1962 )

Winter is over

Average temperature +0.1 above 1981-2010 average.

Rainfall 100mm ( Average 160mm ).

Lack of mountain snow and windy weather quite pronounced.

Yet another cooler, duller and wetter than average summer month. The 7th consecutive August with below average sunshine to round off the dullest summer since 1912 and the dullest ever April to August period.

It was the wettest summer month I have recorded since I started in 2005 though unusually for recent years much of the rainfall was as a result of heavy intense convective downpours with the rainfall duration the lowest of any summer month since June 2010. Would have been okay if the sunshine had been decent but it was awful so another poor summer month - the 19th in succession.

Mean Max: 17.5 (-0.5)

Mean Min: 11.0 (+0.3)

Mean: 14.3 (-0.1)

Highest Temp: 23.2C (18th)

Lowest Temp: 4.0C (31st)

Rainfall: 112.8mm (208%)

Rain days: 16

Wet days: 12

Rain duration: 42.1hrs

Sunshine: 121.2hrs (75%)

Statistics for Sandhutton, North Yorkshire:

Note: my temperature readings are currently about 1 to 1.5C higher than at nearby RAF Topcliffe and Leeming, by both day and night, which seems rather high. I'm hoping to get the weather station moved to a better part of the garden in the near future. Bear this in mind if making comparisons with other stations.

Mean max 21.8C

Mean min 12.4C

Highest max: 27.8C (9th)

Lowest max: 15.9C (30th)

Highest min: 16.9C (18th)

Lowest min: 2.9C (31st)

Precipitation: 82mm

Highest total: 28mm (7th)

Wet days >= 1mm: 15

Days of thunder: 4

Days of sleet/snow/gale/fog: 0

The first half of the month was generally warm and quite sunny, and although rainfall was above normal, this was due to short-lived thundery downpours in the first week. The 5th was a remarkable day- persistent thunder between 12 and 5:30pm, but it took until after 5pm to catch any rain. There were torrential downpours on the 7th associated with thunder, which gave 28mm of rain. There was thunder on four consecutive days- 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th.

The second half of the month turned progressively cooler and cloudier with frequent rain. The minimum of 2.9C on the 31st was lower than any summer minimum that I recorded in 19 years of Cleadon records, and this in spite of the thermometer currently giving me rather high readings generally. On the whole, it was not as dull or wet as June or July, but the cloudy wet weather during the last third of the month rendered it pretty mediocre statistically.

Slightly warmer and duller than normal with average rainfall, but an improvement on last year.

The first 21 days of the month were very warm and dry. The mean temp was 18.0°C and only 11.0mm of rain had fallen. More notably, just one day in the period failed to reach 20°C and 14 days surpassed 22°C. Minima were also rather high, especially around mid-month - a result of frequent cloudy nights. Rainfall during this period was frequent but in small amounts, thunder was regularly heard but the showers often missed this area. That all changed on the 25th when a stationary overhead thunderstorm brought over 30mm in under an hour with localised flooding in the town centre and a peak rainrate of 155mm/hr. The final week of the month was then generally cool, windy and unsettled with frequent rainfall. A potent northerly airflow in the final two days gave a peak gust of 32mph on the 30th and the following night saw clear skies and calmer conditions, allowing the temperature to fall to 6.3°C - just 0.2°C short of the record minimum set in August 1999 and equal to the value set on 31st August 2010.
