I agree john no matter how people try and jazz it up its been a devastating year for ice loss in the arctic quite probably a tipping point for summer ice loss and no amount of talk about speedy winter recovery can change that

It could be a tipping point, but then again it could be a historical low point with year on year increases to come? There's many differing theories as to what is causing the losses, who know's which will be proven correct (for the record, I'm completely open minded as to the cause). At the same time it's also important to remember the record breaking high ice cover being recorded in Antarctica at the moment.

Not from an official site but someone who runs a blog did the calculations. (I'm assuming they are right)

http://sunshinehours...ver-in-31-days/

The minimum was very low but would it have been so low without the massive polar low at the beginning of August?

On a different site, somebody said that the wind (which was almost hurricane force) literally blew the sea ice away and piled it up wherever it came to rest. So when the satellite went over there was no ice to record.

Now it's calmer it's all floating back again — therefore the record reformation of ice.

Haven't seen the synoptics for Canada but the Met 5 day forecast for Calgary looks notably cold for the time of year, with maxima projected at -2, -3 degrees by early next week, quite a swing from the mild conditions of late.

Yes, the forecasts looks very good for Finland (and Scandinavia) now. It's widely reported in media by our weather forecasters that "winter will take a big leap here next week".

I assume that winter is arriving with you much earlier this year compared to last?

Yes, very much. Compared to last year, the winter started fairly late, around New Year. There was a short below-freezing and snow period in early December, but the rest of the December was mild and then there was that super storm right after Christmas.

Take note that my observations concerns Southern Finland. The good news is that the winter is already in full swing in Northern Finland / Lapland.

Looks excellent for Western Russia and Scandinavia, those lows should really deliver the goods!

Some interesting statistics there on snow cover in Finland. We should certainly see some more significant snow cover over Finland and Scandinavia in general by the end of the week.

Tom.

IMS showing the Ice almost sealing off the northern Siberian coast with Ice. Should be sealed up in a few days time. Northern Canada also received a nice dumping of snow.

Expext much of scandi to be white come the weekend, as well as NW Russia.

Western Canada looks very cold for the time of year in the coming days as well.
