This is the difference in two weeks time. At the first of october we had a large negative anomaly. Right now it's around normal (both not shown). So logical thinking brings me to the conclusion that the Snow Advance Index has a rapid increase.

Heres the anomalies, showing the snow fighting back.

Friday to Sunday Snow Cover

Looks a pretty decent growth in sea ice over the last few days. Hopefully Scandi will have a better late autumn/early winter than it did last year!

yes a 2010 post-15601-0-20709000-1350327531_thumb.p would be good in three weeks time rather than a 2011post-15601-0-92116100-1350327529_thumb.p

With a chart like that, snow must have been a miracle event anywhere away from the extreme NW Europe! Lol

I should have clarified the dates, the snow arrived on the 17th October thanks to a blast of polar maritime air, I was walking north of Glen Spean and the snow was quite heavy above 700m. The snowline was around 600m mark. The 18th was a very blustery day with the snow sticking above 700m. Further heavy snow showers arrived overnight bringing dustings of snow down to 400m in places, however, there was a very rapid thaw on the 20th as tropical maritime air arrived. I struck lucky with the snow, the next few weeks brought very mild wet conditions with barely any snow during November, a major contrast to 2010.

... nearly at parity, and only 13 days in to the month. Some of the recent gains over Canada might be a little vulnerable however of we continue to see the modelling the way it is trending at the moment, lots of displaced cold air southward into Russia helping to take us into the 'blue'.

I remember you saying how important it was to get a good Siberian snow cover! A very good start then :)

Latest IMS image shows snow more or less even as it melts and falls elsewhere. Some good quality white pixels over Scandi and the Alps now. Ice extent has exploded in 24 hours.

Todays.

From the NSIDC, this provides a very good view of sea ice.

We almost have a bridge now from siberia/Kamchatka to main ice should we expect very rapid growth now it is getting close to land on both sides of siberia?

No reason not to. The sun has gone down on the pole now I believe, so it will only be getting colder up there.

SIberia seems to become 1 big low pressure area. Excellent news.

In the coming days there will (too) snow fall in area's which hadn't receive snow yet.

First snow in NW Lapland — I've been checking these webcams every day for the last month…

http://www2.liikenne...ndom=1350427270

Edit: Checked the other cameras and the only places in Lapland which seem snow free are NE. It looks well cold though.

Hi Iceni,

Like you, have been looking at the Lapp Cams over the past week or so and there's quite a bit of snow around tonight.

If the models are right, we can expect to see quite a bit more snow over the next couple of weeks with low pressure dropping south from the Norwegian/Arctic Sea down through the Scandinavian region.

Regards,

Tom

Snow already above average and by the looks of it about to take the challenge to the rapid advance of 2009.
