i would suggest no-one looks at snow cover maps for the next 2 weeks! http://www.weather-forecast.com/maps/Russia i could be wrong but i don't think we'll see much!

after that however, we might be breathing a sigh of relief!!.......

In compensation and a second best prize the high pressure could bring a few daily cold records http://coolwx.com/record/

It seems to have worked for this US weather station today http://weather.glads...y.net/site/KMEH

The cold will help later snowfall yes? -11C Thursday predication http://www.weather.c...Russia RSXX5279 and then we hope it leads to things.

Spread is more inportant than positive snow anomily (or is that the same thing) but nice to see some blue on this map for a change.

i think we will see negative anomalies for a while yet but if all goes to plan, we could see a significant reversal to positive in a couple of weeks, with some potentially heavy falls where we need them most! here's hoping!

Whilst the high pressure will certainly limit southern extent i think that Alaska and western Canada should see plenty so on a hemispheric scale it probably won't be too bad.

very true and with the vortex shifting about, it could well increase hemispheric levels quite dramatically

For the effect on the winter atmosphere however it's the snow over Siberia which is critical. Positive snow anomalies over North America tend to enhance the +ve NAO as described here (Cohen again) "Relative impacts of Siberian and North American snow anomalies on the winter Arctic Oscillation" -

Some more gains in snow and ice.

Another impressive blob of snow on the eastern side of Europe

That is an impressive 'blob'; an area of snow bigger than the British Isles overnight is a positive sign. Let's hope it's not gone by tomorrow though!

What I find interesting is the developing consensus over in the model discussion thread of late. Especially considering my judgement from over a week ago - http://forum.netweat...80#entry2375114 may well start coming to fruition. Nevertheless, still time for things to go pear shaped and of course, it is very early doors. Not that I'm ruling anything out though. Posted Image

Only a few hours from the next map, but looking at what the weather has been today the blob I would say will be mostly gone. i'm interested in what a week to ten days of cold will result in for the ice and snow

The Siberian purples on the map look good http://www.weather-forecast.com/maps/Russia?symbols=none&type=lapse

It will be fine Tony! regardless of change keep your Interesting Judgements coming. Posted Image

"Many Thanks for those comparisons with 2008. Whilst the time period I am interested in is 30 days away, we are not a million miles away from a similar pattern developing, in my opinion. What would be needed is a stronger build up of ice near Siberia and additional snowfall to spread further south and westwards towards our shores, simples!

Even if October snowfall came about, it would of course be a transient affair. But, that is not what the analysis of this thread is all about, it is simply geared towards keeping our eyes firmly fixated to all points, North and East of us. Further ahead, this thread will certainly assist us on the long journey towards proper Winter."

Indeed, it is. And there are some good noticeable gains around Siberia and Canada.

And a more gains in Canada to come it looks, as there is a forecast of nine days of snow for Cambridge Bay. http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/Cambridge+Bay+Canada+CAXX1205

That's true CM was hoping for some interest as things look to be a bit slow in the usual places for a little while...

but this forecast seems to spoil the fun

Some of that blob has survived, and by comparison to the UK, it's still a decent size. The gains around the North East of Siberia are starting to accumulate now, as is the north of Canada & Alaska.

As is evident from the model output and in the winter thread, it seems most likely that there will be a good increase in those regions over the next few days as well.

For example, going on current output, this place in central northern Siberia is to expect average or well below temperatures, along with a few days of snow. Nearer to our shores, Murmansk whilst not showing any forecast snowfall is at least showing a much colder trend, from above average to cooler than normal. Unfortunately, the timescale in which my interest lies is currently beyond the 7-day forecast shown above. However, if you look at the 8-14 day forecasts on the same website, they are most fascinating. Posted Image

Some good gains in Ice extent today, and further snow fall across Siberia.

The Western blob hasn't disappeared entirely, and is now two separate, still decent sized patches.

I'm sure most people already know this, but if you don't, you can open each image in a separate tab in your browser by right clicking on the image and selecting the option to open in a new tab. This makes comparing each image really easy to do.

The snowcover has done pretty well in the last few days, hope it stays this way. Can't wait for the first pixel to appear over Scotland :)

Same here 'blast. Keeping an eye out for some further white magic over Scandi and the Alps as a sign of the snow marching west.
