Comparing and showing 2010,2011,2012 cover and what been happening recently.

Snow has moved south and is not as poor as 2011 but looking for a reload and blue positive snow anomalies more locally in January last two days show the red pixels in Europe and the other frames that there has been extra snow recently in the western part of the USA.

It's getting cold as the polar vortex shifts energy dramatically over the next few weeks. At D5, the EC op has -30c uppers touching Svalbard..

I wonder if anyone can tell me what date does the northern hemisphere on average see ice cover at its greatest extent.. I suspect it isn't until mid-late February.

And the same for snow cover - probably not until late January or possibly early February as this is on average the coldest period of the northern hemisphere winter.

December often sees snow cover come in fits and starts, there was no snow cover for instance in Moscow on New Years Day 2007, quite unusual mind...

That's about right, what you are saying .. first week of March for ice http://nsidc.org/arc...-sea-ice-graph/

Early Feb for the snow flicking though the years http://climate.rutge...week=6&ui_set=0

Quite a marked east-west split across Europe, the snowline almost follows the old 'iron curtain' with romania and bulgaria and poland white, though notably czech republic, hungary and the former east germany green. The snow over scandi has now bed in and will stay in situ through the rest of the winter it seems. NE china looks slim on the snow front, no snow in south korea, the difference between west coast of Japan and east coast of Japan is marked.

I suspect the cover is pretty much average for the time of year, though much of central europe should now be white and stay white through the rest of the winter in an average winter.

Eurasia snow cover was ranked eighth out of 47 Novembers this year and the Northern Hemisphere fifth so it was well above average we do not have many days left to see if this December is well ranked for the bigger picture http://climate.rutge...i_set=1#eurasia Edited by LincolnSnowstorm

Well I have read that 70% of Mongolia and 65% of USA are buried under snow as of today and Russia is in deep freeze. One hell of a winter underway and I would not be surprised to see this spread. PDO starting to deepen more negative again, volcanoes spewing ash, the sun is in hibernation, yes hibernation [it is firing on only a 3rd of what it should be] and I think the widespread cold surge will widen.

Yep, it seems (not for the first time) that our little Island has not been invited to the snow party. Plenty of deep cold out to the east, some of the recent temps in Moscow have been insane (highs of -18 earlier this week)

Plenty of snow but not the widespread cold yet early this year that was killing many people http://www.guardian....-eastern-europe and no monthly cold records appearing on http://coolwx.com/record/ but that may change....plenty of winter left to watch the real cold and snow not the -18 for a few days and 10 inches of snow that the UK gets in a cold winter! ...snow drifts aside Posted Image

looks like the spread of snow must be getting close to being as far as it is possible to go south without falling at high altitude.

what i see again is a barren western europe without much of anything, similar to last year. seems all the cold is bottled up in asia, russia and 60 degrees north..would not be surprised to see the rest of this winter being green too especially across most of western europe sadly

It's hard to imagine Uzbekistan and southern Kazakhstan being entirely snow-covered, considering the extreme heat and its landscape being so deserty it was almost lunar when I was there. Continental climates would certainly be interesting, though I imagine that some of them are rather predictable and tiresome, despite the seasonal variation.
