Looking very wintry now in N.E.Lappland, with more snow over the last few hours and more expected during the day.

There truly has been a good step forward over the last few days as illustrated by the following link.

The last update does however, appear to show a loss of ice to our North during the last 24 hours. In spite of this, the bigger picture is most encouraging.

From a brief glance of the GFS 06z (12z running now) ensembles, it suggests my previously highlighted locations under this post are looking as follows.

Helsinki (to our NE) to me, looks favourable for wintry precipitation (some snow at first then perhaps rain) but looks a generally disturbed cool pattern.

Moscow (to our E) to me, looks similar but is basically a warmer pattern, after some snow at first.

Reyjavic (to our NW) to me, is a very cold run although it is suggestive of a drier pattern.

Hoepfully, I will be able to undertake a full analysis another time but for now, I feel the good news regarding snowcover could be getting undermined by overriding Stratospheric signals. As always, time will tell but the UK is entering a cooler phase and I have my eyes fixed on an interesting midweek event, having looked at the 12z run.

Not too much change from Tuesday on the Eurasian/Scandinavian side of things, however some gains in Canada + Alaska and increasing sea ice coverage as expected.

Expect much of scandi currently not white to turn white in the next 48 hours as well as alpine regions and other parts of central europe along with a couple of pixels over the scottish mountains.

Just comparing 2010 to 2012

In 2010 there seemed to be the perfect set up now leading into winter for the UK getting early snow with incoming snow taking a high and focused move from Siberia then Russia and into Scandinavia etc

It looks that already 2012 is a little behind that and the shape is looking like its more flatter rather than pointing at Finland, so will be interesting how that is shaping up over the next week.

Iceland has got a good covering of snow compared to yesterday and more due over the next 7 days, http://www.yr.no/pla...eyri/long.html

so its looking more 2010 again some very cold temps tonight inc http://weather.glads...y.net/site/BIAR

If the snow heads early for New York,Oslo and Reykjavik I'm thinking we would be unlucky to have to wait till after Xmas for a decent UK covering.

The US and Canada had a very poor winter for snow last year, well it looks like it has a chance this one!

There are lots of ways to have a winter but a weather child of winter 2010 would please a few people i think.

2012 is much better, a much more solid snowpack and more in Canada.

Perhaps your right and it will all fill up with snow without being to focused like 2010 the next three to four weeks will answer my question of the importance of copying 2010

I was thinking the exact same thing. Posted Image

Let us hope over the next few weeks, we do not see the jet stream pushing fronts on a Northeastwards trajectory. Rather, we see the fronts diving in from the Northwest and heading Southeast. What we also need is for Northern Blocking to hold tight and a decent increase of snow cover over Europe, as some are predicting. Posted Image

At least, Helsinki is getting snow as suggested by my previous post so maybe I should have been more positive, looking forward, than I was.

Woohoo! First snow here in Southern Finland! Actually, it looks like most of the Finland is covered in snow now!

Compared to 2010-2011, which was excellent winter, we are not behind, we are earlier. First snow came here November 9th in 2010, now it came October 25th!

However, GFS forecasts are looking for milder weather with low pressures and rain next week. Hoping that it won't happen...

The Northern hemisphere is doing rather well atm imo.

Like I've said before, the key for our cold, is getting a nice snow covering in Scandinavia early, so we can take advantage of the change in the prevailing winds that have occurred over the last few years.

We seem now much more likely to get winds all the easterly points of the compass, but the pure easterly and northeasterly will be very special for us this year methinks Posted Image

There seems to have been a rapid recovery in ice and explosion in snow. I wondering if this large snow extent will 'feed' a massive Siberian HP for winter. Its definitely looking positive at present.

I'll answer in Blast's absence if I may.

I think you are correct but we were a Gnats wotsit away in reality, so desperately unlucky in my opinion. The key difference this year, is the encouraging October snowfall, with even the UK witnessing some, although not unexpected by some clairvoyantsPosted Image As well as Northern Blocking taking hold very early on, although I believe it is set to weaken a little. A final (well another, anyhow) signal is the distinct lack of a Euro High Posted ImagePosted Image Now what have I done. Posted Image

I'm really chuffed with the positive vibe for winter 12/13 taking on 10/11 on here which as you know was not expected not to be challenged for a long time.

latest available snow anomaly map is looking ...well pretty positive! post-15601-0-53713100-1351291216_thumb.p

Scotland skips autumn as snow blizzards batter parts of the country

27 Oct 2012 00:01

THE Met Office have issued a severe winter weather warning, with forecasters predicting up to two inches of snow in eastern and northern Scotland.IN one photo we have picture postcard scenery and glorious blues skies as Scotland puts on its best autumnal face.

But just 69 miles away, a mum shivers in bone-chilling temperatures as she battles to push her baby’s buggy through a ferocious blizzard.

There could be no better example of our country’s crazy weather.

In Pitlochry, where the landscape was at its most beautiful, the temperature rose above 10C yesterday.Temperatures rose above 10C in Pitlochry

But in Aberdeen the mercury struggled to stay above freezing and biting north west winds made it feel like minus five as residents endured a white hell of snow and ice.

Twitter users reported blizzards and “completely covered†cars and trees in the Silver City.

Elsewhere, with temperatures barely hitting 6C in the Central Belt and 5C farther north, Scotland was TWICE as cold as parts of Siberia, with temperatures in Vladivostock soaring to a balmy 13C.

And 24 hours before British Summer Time ends tonight, the Met Office issued a severe winter weather alert, forecasting up to two inches of snow in eastern and northern Scotland, plus sleet and hail.

Met Office forecaster Charlie Powell said: “We’re expecting 2-5cm of Friday night snow in Aberdeen and northern Scotland.

“Western Scotland could see hill snow on Saturday lunchtime.â€
