Waves, the US coastguard icebreaker Healy visited Barrow 2 days ago and the SSTs were over 4°c

Quite stormy up there at the moment then Posted Image Do you know off hand when on average barrow's coasts are ice bound from? Edited by quest4peace

There's a good site that looks at the conditions at Barrow - http://seaice.alaska...row_massbalance

The data doesn't go back a long way but roughly speaking in recent years the lasting ice forms on the Chukchi sea (in the webcam) about the start of November on average, so nothing to be concerned about yet.

In the severe melt year of 2007, the ice returned on 15th December, so that could be something to look for this year.

Blue doing well, Red not!

Posted Image First chance of snow away from tallest mountains monday?

Hmm, high ground only. Anything below 1000m is likely to be sleet or very cold rain.

This time last year managed to produce snow down to about 500m over much of the Highlands, uppers look similiar tomorrow, so I wouldn't be surprised to see snow down to at least 600m, with sleet around 400m mark. All very normal for the time of year. The Lakeland Fells haven't experienced any wintriness so far this new season, but we really need a cold arctic plunge to do this. In cold Octobers such as 1992, 1993 snow fell down to very low levels, also 2008 thanks to cold arctic airmass. However, the fells don't normally see their first proper snows before mid November, but from now on the chances increase markedly..

With a chart like that, snow must have been a miracle event anywhere away from the extreme NW Europe! Lol

There was a snow event on the 30th Ocotober (I think it was the 30th). Brought a meter of snow to the peaks of cairngorm etc, but as was the pattern last year, it was gone within the week. I do also remember Madden jumping on that event as a precursor to his "Epic" winter. Posted Image
