At Tiksi, near the Lena delta, on the shores of the Laptev Sea in the Arctic ocean...

There were three flakes of snow and a load of commotion...

For the God of Ice and Snow, blew through the town, causing a snoplosion...

Excuse the 'poetic' license...

Back in December 1963

Snow. As deep as a ravine. Pile upon pile, piled upon that slumping, fateful tree.

Edit. 400 posts!

That was 1963; loads of snow and not a thaw to see,

Before we all go even further off-topic, I think I'll start a NW poem in the Lounge...Okay?

Hmmm, without wishing to be a killjoy, the poetry might warrant its own thread!

If you really do want to carry on with NW's answer to Pam Ayres, you can always start a thread in the lounge?Posted Image

According to GFS there will be a massive expansion of snow. According to Cohen it is important to have a rapid expansion (SAI-index, snow advance index) especially to the more sourthern parts of Siberia. In my opinion things look well. Thanks to Karel for the charts from over here http://forum.vwkweb.nl/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=13188&start=60 (dutch website)

& just remember for future reference the best snowflake is the stella dendrite!!

I take it a blast from Siberia would tend to be to cold and dry for a good dendrite.

Would anyone know what the outside temp and humidity percentage I will be looking for after hearing snow was forecast to have a decent chance of seeing a large dendrite? I know wet snowflakes can clump together but I'm sure I've seen single ones up to 10mm before.

Found the following example on the web wonder if these weather tools are freely available?

12z Skew-T from GYX shows cloud-top ~-18°C...the cold edge of favored stellar dendrite growth region. Note the strong warm-air advection near 700 mb acting on the elevated moist layer where mixing ratios reach their maximum value

I remember driving in heavy snizzle and having to keep stopping to remove the buildup of ice, as bad to drive in as heavy fog.
