Here are today's updates.

Nice to hear that there has been a flurry of snow on top of the Scottish 4000ft'ers, winter is getting nearer!

And a ground frost last night for alot of folk!

Posted Image

Posted Image also, the ice seems to have expanded alot since yesterday's update??

My, the eagerness in this thread, hold your horses!

It's still a few weeks till the lasting snows start to arrive - recent averages have been from the equinox onwards for the Arctic coastal areas and for the Siberian cold pole record cold towns of Oimyakon and Verkhoyansk it's the first or second week of October.

There has been a few days with snow at Grimsstadir in Iceland in the past week, but it's still a long while before it sticks for a prolonged period.

The wind pattern has shifted and is now spreading the ice out towards the Pacific side of the Arctic. No actual new ice growth yet though.

If people are uploading images of the currant day's snow and ice, could they please host it through a site like 'Photobucket' or such?

Otherwise we have problems with some of the images automatically updating every day, which messes up the thread's timeline if you see what I mean?

So we have images from 3-4 days ago showing the 29th's image.

Thankyou Posted Image

To expand on this, the way I do it is to right-click and save to my desktop. Then upload it manually Posted Image Does depends on the site obviously as sometimes they don't let people save or copy their images.

I'm not sure about other photo hosting sites, but Photobucket is fine.

The images are ok to save and store from the national ice centre, but if they are taken directly from that site, they auto-update.

But feel free to upload whatever you think will be relevant to the thread :)

most alpine high level ski areas have had snow but temperatures will rise over the weekend with warmer weather again for most into next week. About 6-8cm at 7000ft where I ski each year and snow down to village level at Murren.

Yeah Polar it is taken from that cam. Ignores anyone has an Android search for WebLiveWallpaper in Google Play. You can set any webcam image as your wallpaper and you can set it to refresh whenever you want. Great for watching the snow come in. :)

South of topic I know and a bit of a ramble with excess web links Posted Image .... but before the N.H. snow realy kicks in Posted Image just a thought for the S.H. as it comes to the end of its winter.

Take South west Australia Canberra for example ,more snow than for ten years and setting records for cold. I guess gobal warming maybe having a comparable effect to them as it is for us.

Some details here if interested http://www.canberrat...0817-24cgc.html and a snippet here http://twitter.com/6...653527921967104

South Africa also needs a mention http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread869101/pg1 and http://www.news24.com/Multimedia/MyNews24/Snow-in-the-Western-Cape-20110916

If any one got any charts to demonstrate whats been going on it would help my understanding of the situation.

Will the Northern hemi beat the Southern hemi this winter at records, rare cold, snow levels etc looks like its got a lot of work to do but well done to bradford for beating the 1908 August cold record to get the ball rolling!Posted Image

I thought you had more than 29 posts harshwinter? lol. Anyway, I reckon the north will beat the south quite easily as there is simply more populated land mass around the Arctic circle than around the Antarctic. I reckon it's going to be a harsh winter eh lol!

Have been reading this thread with interest and started wondering if there was a guide to autumn and winter (with a UK perspective) outlining what happens and when... some kind of narrative detailing what we would observe here (leaves changing, days shortening, temperatures dropping, winds increasing, first signs of frost, snow and ice, etc) and their causes.

Something which tells us novices who want to follow the start of autumn and winter this year what to look for.

Anyone?

Hope your right hammer, I'm after some cold weather weirding and some uk records broken in the next six months, boring weather that does not get into the papers can stay away.

My ideas for you citizenx

A overview here could be useful

http://theweatherout...eather-forecast

Following what people are observing on threads like

http://forum.netweat...21-autumn-2012/ http://www.cloudyskies.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=1383

Checking a almanac for you area i.e

http://uk.weather.co...fromSearch=true

Others may have other ideas as i'm still new to this site.

Looking at the charts, it could be a little bit of a slow start to the formation of snow cover at higher altitudes as the very warm summer across the Northern Hemisphere only very slowly wants to sub-side. Won't surprise me if by mid-month, snow cover is below average.

looks like your right about the warmth ,far more daily heat records than cold ones at the mo http://coolwx.com/record/

12 days could be time for snow cover to improve maybe time will tell.

More snow forcast for Friday into Saturday ...subject to change! http://www.svalbard-images.com/
