So it was about this time last year, or maybe September, that I joined and enjoyed this thread very much. As a snowboarder, I search the very pits of hell for any sign of snow.

Now it's time to start it all again. Autumn into Winter is the slowest time of the year for me!

Been snowboarding since December 2009.. the infamous winter of 09/10.

Winter 09/10 - Epic winter. 15ft snow on road up Cairngorm mountain 2m+ at the summit. And 2ft of snow locally

Winter 10/11 - Impressive winter. Not as much snow locally, 6-10 inches, 2m+ on Cairngorm mountain.

Winter 11/12 - Bummer. Occaisional flurries locally, mostly mild mush. Under a foot on the mountains. Came and left quickly.

Winter 12/13 - Praying for an 09/10 winter. Will settle for a 10/11 one.

Just though I would post a link to contribute to the "Ramping".

Also, just noticed that Mr Madden is charging a fee for his 2012/2013 winter forecast. http://www.exactaweather.com/UK_Premium_Forecast.html

Yep! You linked that last year, and I would advise all snow lovers to keep that a bookmark. Nice one TONA!

My next post will be an experiment.

http://www.yr.no/pla...d/Longyearbyen/ shows snow turning up on the webcam mentioned previously www.snsk.no/longyearbyen.145587.en.html and has three others at the bottom of the web page.

.....so later this evening maybe an early snow show treat for some Posted Image

I could not get netweather to show me later todays forecast only tommorow (gave an error message) so giving the yr.no weather link .

Other people may be able to show another forecast. svalbard is one hour ahead of us.

I think its the nearest low level snow to us at the mo being about 400 miles north of the top of Norway, I was a bit hopeful that it would be white down to the sea level but we will have to wait a week or two for that.....then the wait for low level northern Norway perhaps. Chuffed my snow ramp is working ; )

Even without the gulf stream, the UK would still be mild for its latitude due to the prevailing direction of weather systems (west - east), and, that, well, you know, big old pond called the Atlantic.

Hmm, no. Actually if the gulf stream was to shut down, we'd have similar winters to Canada.

Hope its not too long until the ice starts growing again I noticed a few more white pixels in eastern siberia and the alaskan rockies which is encouraging!!

On the downside looks like the northwestern pasasage and the whole polar basin will be circumnavigable again which is a litle sad this seems to be a regular thing now every summer

Yes, so very cold winters. We were taught that in Geography, and it's very logical if you think about it! :)

No BC has the mildest winters in Canada..so you weren't paying attention in Geography!

Not quite that logical. As has been mentioned, we would still get most of our winds off the Atlantic, which will cause mild temperatures (just not quite as mild as now). Would you consider the winters in Vancouver as very cold?

Being surrounded by water, with an ocean to the west, under a predominantly westerly air flow is a much larger cause of our mild winters than the gulf stream.
