08-04-12: Vicious Summer Thunderstorm

Yesterday was by far the best convective day so far this summer in this neck of the woods. Instead of getting views of thunderstorms moving east and west of us as per every other occasion this year, this little gem became quite a vicious monster as tracked NEwards towards Bristol. Here are some radar captions showing how it all began and how the cell backbuilt between 4.30pm and 6.30pm. These are half hourly snapshots of raintoday starting at 4.30pm.

So the first 2 piccies are from about 1pm, just before I went into Bristol - really just showing the rapid rise of cbs to the west over the Severn Estuary throughout the day. There were a couple of rumbles from these before I headed into Bristol.

Then things really kicked off later in the day when I got back from town. These are from the 1st thunderstorm that formed pretty much overhead with bright lightning from within the cloud and mass of rain and associated explosive booms of thunder.

As that cell moved away, another one linked with the first one formed another nice gust front type feature with rapidly strengthening wnids and more thunder and lightning. This one however zipped through quite qucikly with clearing skies behind.

All in all a brilliant day that started with warm sunshine, build up of cumulonimbus clouds and a fantastic period of thunder and lightning between 4-7pm. I'm not so hopeful about today but with more thundery chances later this coming week, things could go bang once again.

Yes that was a special day around these parts. Here in Winscombe we heard plenty of thunder and some good flashes, but the best was to our West and Northwest. From my viewpoint it all seemed to erupt over Bridgewater Bay and the Quantocks area. I could see the tops and rather impressive they were. Well MIGUEL HUGO ROBERTO , thanks for all the pics info etc, once I've learned the computer a bit perhaps i can post some pics. Here's looking to a few fireworks from mother nature later this weekend.

Cheers legritter
