Yes that's true, but on average average highs fall below freezing in October in the large Siberian cities.

I am not fully aware of the locations of these cities but in eastern Siberia the snow starts building from late August/early September and just progresses ever south west.

With a land area nearly 55 times that of the UK and covering almost 10% of the world's surface it is slightly absurd to be able to describe the climate of Siberia in a single sentence. Although not considered as part of Siberia for administrative purposes, cities such as Ekaterinburg or Chelyabinsk are often considered to mark the western edge near the Ural mountains and are closer to London than to Oymakon or Verkhoyansk in the Siberian cold pole.

The northern parts of Siberia lie within the arctic and it is here bordering the Arctic Ocean where the snow arrives earliest, in the last week of September before the cold pole area in the first week of October.

That the snow arrives is as reliable as clockwork, the actual date is not - that is the kind of sweeping generalisation made on natural history documentaries!

Average, (earliest, latest) dates of lasting snow cover over the last dozen years -

Tiksi 25/09 (07/09 - 03/10) - snows last into June

Oymyakon 04/10 (23/09 - 20/10)

Verkhoyansk 08/10 (18/09 - 02/11)

Novosibirsk (largest Siberian city) - 05/11 (23/10 - 19/11)

Ekaterinburg - 11/11 (23/10 - 12/12)

Vladivostok (far east on the Pacific) - 09/12 (14/11 - 22/01)

Regarding latest dates it is worth noting that for the central Siberian cities the temperatures are far below freezing at this point, but are very dry and may be without measurable snowfall. Milder air can reach Ekaterinburg and particularly Vladivostok where thawing of early snowfalls can mean it is January before it lasts for a prolonged period.

On the other hand....we here have already lost all our heat so that today we already have temperatures we can expect for the middle of October.

the difference between the UK and Siberia is that 'your' temperature will flip up and down on its gradual descent into winter values. Those in Siberia show very very little up on their way down to winter values!

UK Outlook for Wednesday 29 Aug 2012 to Wednesday 12 Sep 2012:

Unsettled conditions are likely to prevail through this period, though fine spells are possible too. Temperatures overall look more likely to be on the low side of the average for this time of year, whilst total rainfall during the period is more likely to be above average than below. There is also a signal for less sunshine than normal for much of the UK. .

The Met office are saying that they are expecting a lot of rain and cloud with below average sunshine and low temperatures for the first half of September very negative. Is this what most of the models are currently predicting? When will netweather produce an Autumn 2012 forecast?

Just got to get through this weekend.

We could hit 34c here I reckon looking at the models..............yuk.

I hate the heat, too hot by day and terrible to sleep in at night.

Nothing better than -2c outside and being all wrapped up asleep in a warm bed :)

It's been said time and time again, nature is reactive, not proactive. Berry counts indicate the Summer so far, not the Autumn to come.

Aye, IF. We've seagulls and grebes available, for making forecasts!laugh.png

From BBC:

"Sunday 2 September—Sunday 16 September

Changeable weather is likley to prevail through the start of September, though it won't be all doom and gloom with some decent spells of weather too.

Temperatures overall look more likely to be on the low side of the average for September, whilst total rainfall during the period is more likely to be above average than below. It also looks like being quite a dull start to September, with below average sunshine forecast".

Looking forward to the Autumnal 'nip in the air'

August update still going for higher probability of below average temps for Autumn/Winter period...Sot sure how accurate these are though.

An 80% chance of below normal, a definite clear signal there. I haven't seen such a high probability for below average temps before, looks like the winter woolies will be out early this year.

I sincerely hope that we have the Indian summer we had last year. I always think that the heat in September/October is softer and gentler than the summer heat. And it's lovely by the coast at that time of year. :D
