Hi guys,

This years Perseid meteor shower is one of the best of the year, with only around a 20% illuminated waning crescent Moon rising around 1am on the peak night of August the 12th-13th. I remember the last decent one in the summer of 2010, in which I witnessed around 90 meteors in a few hours!

http://www.facebook.com/events/305308216231125/ is a facebook page I've made for my local area.

Here's hoping for some clear weather that night!

That's good news. But every year for the past few it's been so cloudy over Norwich that I've been lucky to see one. The best one I can remember was about 1993/94 (one of those) and the show was magnificent. :)

When i was growing up this display if you can call it that, was always a complete and utter waste of time. I think it happens around mid August if memory serves me right.

Looks like some may have a good view (weather wise) of the show over the next few days - should be easy to find too

perfect for after BarBQ sky watching with a couple of glasses (-:

These meteor showers are generally disappointing in my experience even if it's clear.

I wouldn't make any special effort to go out looking anyway.

Was Out There....On the patio 22:00hrs until 01:00 Saturday morning.Looking around the skies with telescope.Clear night, just right...Saw 11 Satellites passing overhead.Of the Meteors Manged to see at least 13..One had a large trail and a flash as it burned up.The best seen for an age.The last quarter of an orange colored moon came up.Studied the moon for a while and never saw any more meteors so went of to bed...No chance off seeing any more due to clouds and rain forecast until at least past Wednesday...Well worth the effort...

Can anyone-else remember the days when the papers contained info on satellite-passages, as apart of the weather forecast? GOD (Geo-Orbital Direction informationlaugh.png ) if they did that now, they'd fill the entire paper!

The Perseids are a tricky meteor shower to observe given the peak-time of sighting them is between 2 and 4am. Anything before/after this time is complicated by twilight and Zodiac light. The Leonids imo are a better observng shower given the clarity of polar air and more noticable the longer darker nights.

Perseids have been amazing in past years, the last good one was 2010. The zhr in the 90's used to be hundreds as that was was swift-Tuttle was at its closest to earth.

THE PERSEID METEOR SHOWER STILL UNDERWAY: Earth is passing through a stream of debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle, source of the annual

. Worldwide observers are now reporting more than 120 Perseids per hour. Forecasters recommend looking during the dark hours before dawn when activity is expected to be highest.

Last night in Groveland, California, amateur astronomer Rick Whitacre photographed a flurry of Perseids over Pine Mountain Lake:

In saw two on Saturday night, none last night and hope I'll see more this evening. Although with my luck it'll be cloudy as usual. Really, the best thing I EVER saw in the heavens was Hale-Bopp comet in 1997. He was simply amazing.

SUBSIDING METEOR SHOWER: After two days of strong activity, the Perseid meteor shower is finally subsiding. For much of August 12-13, meteor rates exceeded 100 per hour.

Now, according to worldwide observers, activity is only half that and continues to drop.

During the peak on August 12th, David Kingham observed dozens of Perseids over Snowy Range, Wyoming:

Sadly once again, I was clouded out for Saturday and Sunday! Friday I saw about 7, until 2am and it clouded over.

Next - The Leonids in November!
