June 2012, Lampeter, Ceredigion, Wales

Very unsettled, exceptionally wet, quite cool and dull

Frequent rains in a very low pressure dominated month. Perhaps the wettest ever for this area, much wetter than 2007 (186mm), and the only comparable month I can find is June 1982 when 213mm fell at Carmarthen. Although a cool and quite a dull month, not as poor as further north and east. A remarkable month for rainfall, 3 days with over 1 inch falling, 5 with over 20mm, and 8 over 10mm.

.

1st / 2nd: Warm with sunny intervals, rain later 2nd

3rd – 8th: Cool and very unsettled. An unusually deep Summer low brought periods of heavy rain during 7th and 8th, almost 60mm falling, and gale force winds 8th, which was especially cool, no higher than 11c during the day time.

9th – 13th: Relatively dry interlude, a few showers with some better sunny spells, and average temperatures.

14th – 17th: Another deep Summer low crossed the UK, bringing a second notably wet spell, this time with 70mm in 72 hours. Cool to very cool, dull and windy too.

18th – 20th: Mostly dry and bright with temperatures up to average, Rain late on 20th.

21st – 24th: Unsettled, rain at times, heavy 21st, mainly cloudy and rather windy and cool.

25th - 27th : Became warm and mostly dry with sunny spells

28th -30th: A warm humid morning 28th, but then cooled off to a rather cool end to the month, with rain or showers at times. Rather windy.

June 2012 was the 2nd wettest month I have recorded, only beaten by November 2009! It was the coolest June I have recorded, just beating 2008 by 0.02c! There were only 6 dry days and only 8 days got above 20c, with the hottest day coming on the plume day (28th).

For Warminster, Wiltshire ...

Average max = 18.11c (Highest = 26.6c on 28th)

Average min = 11.48c (Lowest = 7.0c on 13th)

Mean = 14.79c

Dry days = 6

Rain days = 24

Rainfall = 155.5mm

hobart.jpg

HOBART ( pop 200,000 ) is capital of the Australian island state of Tasmania ( pop 510,000 - almost same size as Scotland ). Hobart is situated on an estuary 2 miles from the ocean and is backed by a 1270m/4200ft mountain range.

June - First month of winter

The focal point of the month was a prolonged, middle-of-the-road cold change towards the end which brought 9 straight days of below average maxima and minima, occasional showers, the first frosts, and snow at times settling to 500m/1800ft. This followed the first two thirds being mild and settled; and in balance was not enough to pull the average monthly temperature into negative anomoly territory. This being the 8th consecutive month above the 1981-2010 mean, the warmest decades on record in the capital.

Average maximum: 12.5 ( +0.1 )

Average minimum: 5.3 ( 0.0 )

Rainfall: 33mm ( Average 54mm )

Extremes in daily temperature

Highest maximum: 17.2 ( Record 20.6 in 1907 )

Lowest maximum: 8.0 ( Record 4.3 in 1985 )

Highest minimum: 9.5 ( Record 14.4 in 1957 )

Lowest minimum: 0.9 ( Record -2.8 in 1972 )

For all you snowlovers out there...

A wet month with interesting temperature statistics with the Min showing above average and the Max showing below average leaving the mean just a touch above the long term value

Temperatures in degrees C with long term values in brackets

Mean=14.7(14.4)

Avge Min=10.8(9.5) coldest night=11th with 6.3 and warmest night=28th with 17.1

Avge Max=14.7(14.4) hottest day=27th with 25.9 and coldest day=3rd with 9.5

Total rainfall=72.6mm with the wettest day being 3rd with 18.0mm; the wettest June since 2007 which recorded 144.0mm, so barely half that exceptional month.

20 days with 0.2mm or more and 13 with 1.0mm or more

1 day with thunder, no fog, frosts or snow

My statistics for central Reading in June 2012:

Average maximum: 18.1

Average minimum: 11.4

Average for month: 14.8

Highest maximum: 26.7 (June 28)

Lowest maximum: 12.0 (11)

Highest minimum: 17.2 (27)

Lowest minimum: 7.0 (13)

[Edit - just compared my temperatures with those recorded in Warminster by Andy Bown - I haven't been copying you, Andy - honest whistling.gif The similarity is remarkable.]

No frosts or thunder recorded.

Rainfall: no data available for this site; estimate using Reading University's data is around 120mm for the month.

A rather cool and exceptionally wet month, with only 7 dry days and around 240% of average rainfall. Average minimum was just above normal but maxima were around 2 deg C colder than normal. The maximum of 12.0 on the 11th was the lowest recorded in June at this location (since 2002).
