Worst April Through June Since?

Looking at the satellite image and temp forecasts no chance of even reaching average here today.. probably a below average max of 15-17C. Loads of low cloud and a thick mass of more mid-level coming in. Sea temps being below average in summer again doesn't help..

Probably a near record chain without 20C being breached here in summer, a near record bad month for max temps, and a near record dull month for sunshine would be my guess. The Met Office anomaly maps will be interesting.

Oh shock horror the last minute upgrades on the 12z now downgrading back to rainy rubbish for tommorow and Thursday.

Now confirmed were end the month without having a single sunny day.

Surely you would have had at least 5 hours of sun on 18-20th June and the 1st?

The 1st was overcast all day here, the 18-20th saw some sunny spells but I mean as in a whole day with plenty of sunshine instead of just before 9am or after 5pm.

Due to the gloom pushing temperatures back down to 18c now it looks like 21c may not be exceeded this month afterall unless tommorow throws a shocker!

Yet another excruciatingly vile day today. Murk, rain, drizzle and another exceptionally low max of only 11.4C, barely 1C above the record low for this time of year. Also had a diurnal range of just 1C -previously unheard of during summer sleep.png

This is the full list of horrors that June 2012 has produced at Aberdeen Airport, Dyce where records go back to 1941:

Mean Max: Lowest on record; previous lowest 1971

Monthly Max: Lowest on record; previous lowest 1971

Sunshine: 2nd Lowest on record or possibly even lowest on record; current lowest 2007

Sunless days: Highest on record; previous highest 2007

Rainfall: 2nd Highest on record; Only 1997 wetter

Rain Days: Highest on record; previous highest 2002

It would be hard to imagine a worse summer month. In fact it's hard to comprehend just how a summer month could be this horrible.

An absolutely dismal run of Junes we've been enduring since 1997 bad.gif

Must admit, sunshine wise this june has been terrible, don't think there has been one day of wall to wall sunshine all day and most of the day has been generally cloudy it would seem with today being no exception apart from a couple of sunny moments this afternoon but its blink and you miss it type of stuff.

We have not had the worse of it in terms of rainfall and wind mind so it could be worse I suppose.

Well this June was certainly worse than 1991 here. If taking rainfall and sunshine as the main comparisons, then this June has been one of the worst ever. Beating both 1987 and 1972 by a long long way. And now here is looking like one of the coolest July days for a long time.

I well remember that summer. The first 6 weeks were really poor, but then it completely turned around, like you say.

Let's hope history repeats!

but then we didnt have the modern summer to contend with whistling.gif

I am feeling pessimistic , hope I am wrong

It would be unfair on most recent summers to suggest that this June has been a continuation of the theme of recent years. From an outdoor activities perspective this month has been a shocker on a par with June 1987, with (according to Philip Eden at Climate-uk) nearly 250% of normal rainfall, most of which has been persistent in nature, and 40% less sunshine than usual. This is in contrast with the very wet Julys of 2008 and 2009, which averaged nationally had temperatures and sunshine close to average, and also contrasts with the Junes of 2008-2011 (indeed the Junes of 2009 and 2010 were generally drier and sunnier than average).

June 1991 was colder than this but mainly due to cooler nights, reflecting the fact that although it was a cloudy wet month for most, it was generally somewhat less so than this year.

The southerly tracking jet stream and frequent easterly winds in the north have resulted in remarkably low maxima in north-eastern Britain, although they have also resulted in north-west Scotland, in contrast to the rest of the UK, being drier and slightly sunnier than average.

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
