lol why is cumbria is poor for thunderstorms? were always in a dry slot, its unbelievable tbh

its because you are the north west of england, one of the most boring weather regions for storms, I bet your not in the dry slot when persistant drizzle is forcast , just like here

Of course not.. don't be silly. The last time I saw lightning was back in March. Where's Supacell? He'll confirm how horrible West Yorkshire has been for thunderstorms for 2011 and 2012.

I haven't seen lightning since last august, or heard thunder since December. This evening we've had frequent moderate and heavy showers, the sun was shining throughout all of the last one which felt nice, but still no thunder or even any sferics near by. Bring on winter, when we usually get more storms around here than in the summer!

Good convergence zone ongoing over Somerset into Wiltshire with some heavy downpours for the last few hours, just as it seems the

train of showers is ending more are developing on the Western end with the line moving 5 or so miles North then a similar distance

South.

Very heavy rain and showers here during the night and I was woken around 5.30am by a torrential downpour.

I can see tall cells building to the NE out over the North Sea. They are going up very fast. Perhaps we might get a light show (flash lightning my dad always called it) over the sea after dark falls. Happens here in the summer occassionaly.

Lol, sorry haven't been around today but now I am here I can confirm what Aaron says. Not a single storm yet this year and last year just one brief storm in July. West Yorkshire is bad for storms :(

I think the storms today were primarily concentrated in a line from W Midlands to the Wash, with not that much elsewhere.

Almost signed in at the NSC this week, but whaddya know?? TWO storms yesterday, overhead as well instead of 5 miles away good.gif Astonishing really - one just before our war memorial dedication, then a nice dry 45 mins for the ceremony, then another bigger, louder one just afterwards :D Some good cracks of thunder and visible lightning too :)

Looks very, very messy out in Europe today:

Storm Forecast

Valid: Thu 07 Jun 2012 06:00 to Fri 08 Jun 2012 06:00 UTC

Issued: Wed 06 Jun 2012 21:46

Forecaster: GATZEN

A level 2 was issued for central and eastern France and south-western Germany mainly for severe wind gusts.

A level 1 was issued for north-eastern Spain and southern France mainly for large hail.

A level 1 was issued for northern France and western Germany mainly for tornadoes.

A level 1 was issued for the Alpine region mainly for large hail and severe wind gusts.

A level 1 was issued for eastern Ukraine mainly for large hail.

SYNOPSIS

A long-wave trough moves into western Europe at Thursday, while a ridge axis will move from the Benelux countries to Poland at the end of the forecast period. In the wake of the ridge axis, a strong low-level south-westerly flow will expand from the Iberian Peninsula across France and further into the Alpine region. This leads to warm air advection. The nose of the warm air mass is expected from the northern Balkans to eastern Germany at Friday morning.

Ensembles giving a good possibility for lightning in the West and South West in particular:

Not showing on GFS general forecast though:
