There was a very interesting programme on BBC4 tonight about the above. Probably invented by Archimedes it showed how brilliant the Greeks were 2000 thousand years ago. Not only that the process of working out what it was was extremely clever. I won't rabbit on as there is a good web sight on the subject but the progamme is worth a look if you are interested.
