Here we go, trust the Daily Ex to give us a reasoned view of the upcoming events:

BRITAIN is set to be battered by storms and hurricane-force 80mph winds from lunchtime today. Emergency services warned of a “major flood event†from tonight with up to three months’ worth of rain falling in three days. A system of low pressure from the Atlantic is set to bring a repeat of last weekend’s storms as the country endures the worst June weather for more than a century.

Jonathan Powell, forecaster for Vantage Weather Services, said: “We have had a brief respite but now we have another very nasty system of low pressure rolling in. This is really capable of packing a punch.â€

He said most parts of the country face 70mph winds but they could be whipped up into a repeat of last weekend when wind speeds in some areas reached 82mph. To add to the misery, eight inches of rain could fall by Saturday. He said this will fall “on already sodden ground, bringing the risk of severe floodingâ€. There are some very heavy downpours on the way which is the reason for the warnings in place

After the recent deluge Britain’s three biggest water companies yesterday ended hosepipe bans brought in over fears of a drought. Forecasters now believe it could rain until September. Last night the Met Office issued severe weather warnings for tomorrow and Saturday. Forecaster Helen Chivers said although parts of the South and South-west are likely to be worst hit, the entire country will suffer heavy downpours. She said: “We have another Atlantic weather system moving in and we expect that to hit Thursday lunchtime. “There are some very heavy downpours on the way which is the reason for the warnings in place, but there are also going to be strong winds.â€

The Environment Agency has issued 21 flood alerts across much of the country with five more serious flood warnings. Last night it issued a statement warning people in Devon, Cornwall, West Somerset, North Wales and parts of the Midlands to be prepared for flooding. It said “intense thundery downpours†could spark surface water flooding. The statement also urged caravan and park sites to be on their guard after several were flooded last weekend in Wales. The Agency also urged people to check for updates on its website or on Twitter.

It warned motorists not to drive through floodwater and advised the public to stay well clear of swollen rivers. Forecasters said the washout summer threatens to persist until September. London is hosting the 2012 Olympics in July and August. Jonathan Powell, of Vantage Weather Services, said: “There might be a brief respite around midsummer’s day but then it is downhill again. “July and August look wet and miserable, the only consolation is there may be brief spikes of hot weather intermittently.†Independent forecasters at MeteoGroup said this has been the worst June weather since records began more than a century ago. Earlier this week rising temperatures and moist air threatened to trigger tornadoes in the so-called “Tornado Valley†along central England. That threat is now receding because tornadoes cannot happen in the middle of gales.

Britain’s largest water companies – Thames, Anglia and Southern – finally lifted their hosepipe bans from yesterday. But South East Water, Sutton and East Surrey Water, Veolia Water Central and Veolia Water Southeast said they had no immediate plans to lift the ban. Thames’s sustainability director Richard Aylard thanked its 8.8 million customers for complying with the ban. He admitted: “In early April things looked very different than they do now. “We had had the two driest years on record and we had no idea how long it was going to stay dry.â€

LOL you'd swear we're bracing for a second Hurricane Katrina.

A few spots of raining starting here, surprised how windy it is too.

Looks like the system will be deeper than orginally forecast ~981mb at it's lowest now

LOL you'd swear we're bracing for a second Hurricane Katrina.

I'm fairly sure it will be quite windy and there will be a lot of rain. I'm less certain if it will equal last week (when we lost the roof here at work) and I'm kind of hoping it isn't, as a few people on here had some pretty devastating damage. Unfortunately nature is going to do what it is going to do, we can't stop it but we can make a few educated guesses as to how much and where things will happen.

Worth keeping an eye on this thread over the next 12 to 24 hours to see how things are panning out

At least the Daily Mail's 'hurricane force' winds are only 60mph instead of 80mph...

Britain is set to be lashed by 60mph hurricane-force winds bringing three months of rain over the next three days with forecasters predicting it will be the wettest June since records began.

Emergency services issued a 'major flood event' alert in the South-West and Wales last night with eight inches of rain expected as a massive front of terrible weather sweeps in from the Atlantic.

Subtle changes this afternoon in both GFS and HiRLAM maybe the isobars are further apart and winds won't be quite as bad and widespread on the Southern flank?

Still looking frisky in Scotland and through Merseyside/NW England

But the rain is still very much there and maybe increasing in the South and especially the South East again:

Sorry QS, I can't be more upbeat about possibilities as I see them at the moment. Is there anyway you can take preventive measures tomorrow to try and limit what happened earlier in the week?

Just trying to look elsewhere for hints and info. The Netweather NMM charts just about go out to 18.00 hours tomorrow at the moment and they don't make good reading at the end of tomorrow afternoon (in line with many other models):

Persistent moderate rain in Cork since late morning. Plenty of surface water around, but no reports of any flooding so far.

The wind has been gradually picking up throughout the day, not particularly strong yet though.

On holidays?

There's a well run station near you in Cobh, which you can check through this site or this, if you want some nearby rainfall totals and wind speed info.
