With 240 years of daily Central England Temperature (C.E.T.) data (except for missing Dec 1786), I have constructed a computer file that can generate many items of interest.

First up, the mean daily C.E.T. values for the entire 240-year period, rounded to 2 decimals.

** Dec daily means adjusted 0.01 down to account for missing Dec 1786 which had monthly of 2.8.

To derive actual averages of 239 years of data, add .01 to each day in Dec.

Feb monthly is 4.39 whether you weight leap year day or not. ________________________________________________________________________________________ Departures from the first table (240 yrs) are from a data set that include these years. To calculate (approximately) what the increase or in a few cases decrease is from the previous years (this is approximate because 2011 is after the 30-year period) you can inflate the anomalies by one-eighth. Example, if a certain day has become 0.8 deg warmer in the recent 30-year period then it is 0.9 deg warmer than the years before the period started. I will try to post a chart of the anomalies on an annual scale below, but you can see from a visual inspection that certain periods in mid-February, early April and parts of June were actually colder in 1981-2010 than the entire series, while many other parts of the year have warmed about a degree or so. The largest single daily anomaly is +1.99 deg for 10 March followed by +1.97 for 8 November. In the graph provided in the link, the scale is 0.1 deg so read "20" as 2.0 C deg ... the graph shows the daily departures of the modern 1981-2010 "normal" period from the long-term mean of 1772-2011. As explained, you can get an approximation of the change from before 1981, by increasing the anomalies by one-eighth of their values. Example, 0.8 becomes 0.9 and -0.24 becomes -0.27. Zero stays at zero. What makes this approximate is that 2011 is part of the data set. The logic of this means that if the date you're looking at had a very warm day in 2011, then the positive departure of the 30-year period would be increased by slightly more than one-eighth to compare it to pre-1981. The biggest variation would only be about 2% (so 14%).

Dalton minimum 30-year averages

1795 to 1824

This table can be compared to the first two, showing how cold the winter climate can be for a 30-year period. I chose the coldest possible 30-year winter period, 1795-1824 ... the Dalton is usually held to be about 1794 to 1834 spanning three rather weak solar cycles that peaked around 1801, 1816 and 1830. This chosen period may not be the coldest for other parts of the year. However, it does give you an idea how cold a non-glacial period can become, with some days showing averages below 2.0 deg C.

Not all days in the Dalton period were colder than the long-term. For example, the period 21-25 Feb ran as much as two-thirds of a degree warmer. The first ten days of May also ran warmer by about half a degree at times. The end of July ran almost a half degree warmer (although the first third of July was a degree colder at times). 15 to 23 September saw another warmer spell in the half degree range.

The colder winters were most evident in Dec-Jan rather than Feb, and the onset of these colder winters was marked by considerably colder weather around 3-6 November (over a degree below the long-term averages there). Another marked cooling took place 17-25 November which ran almost a degree lower than long-term. All of December ran consistently colder by an average of just about a full degree, the 8th-10th and 24th-27th were particularly cold. This much colder trend lasted through the January averages and faded out in February.

The frequency of record lows has dropped substantially in recent decades. This is easy to see, as all cases of zero record lows are left blank. Only the cold spell at the end of 2010 (edit and 1st March 2018.) provide any daily record lows since 1996. The frequency of daily highs has increased at a much slower pace. Any year at random should score 1.5 for each. The average from 1772 to 1780 actually runs above that pace, then from about 1781 to 1817 there are fewer record highs. Starting in 1818 the pace begins to approach at least random, and only occasionally falls below that, for example in the 1880s. Note that 1947 and 1976 scored higher than any recent years.

The frequency of record highs in the period 1982 to 2012 inclusive has seen about a quarter of all record highs (93.5) and that in about one-eighth of the total time, so we are generally seeing twice the frequency expected at random. However, this is not greatly different from 1931 to 1980 which was a longer period that produced about the same number of record highs.

The periods with the most record lows compared to random would seem to be the 1780s, 1807-1823 and 1835 to 1845. The frequency had already started to drop off considerably through the 20th century before the recent absolute decline that ended in 2010.

Summary of the Annual extremes (see last four posts for tables)

Highest Daily Mean for each of 245 years 1772 to 2016

The range of dates is 15 May (1833, tied) to 01 October (1985).

The count by month (assigning 0.5 to tied values in different months) is

The number in brackets gives the number of years in which the month at least shares in the category of highest daily mean. For example, August had two cases of dates tied with other months, so the count was 75.0, the number of cases was 76. A case where a month has more than one day does not affect this, there were about half a dozen such cases, usually consecutive days or nearby days in a warm spell. One year actually had three days tied, all in July.

Despite July coming ahead of August in this count, the highest frequency on any one date is 8 on the 12th of August. Other dates that scored five or more include 5 June (5), 5 July (7), 9, 12, 16, 17 July (all made it to five with one tie included), 20. 22, 24 and 29 July (all at 6) , and 5 Aug (5). There seems to be a little flicker of warmth near the end of September into the first of October given that one case fell in the period 15-26 September, then three from 27 Sep to 1 Oct.

Periods with very few annual extremes within the summer months include 11-14 June (zero) and from 21 to 26 August which totalled 5.0 including two ties. The frequency after that period is not much greater but given the seasonal distribution that part of August stands out a bit. There are ten cases between 27 August and 2 September.

The trend of these values is gradually increasing although the period 1975 to 2006 stands out in recent times, since 2007 (to 2012 as originally posted) of course the performance of this index is nothing out of the ordinary as the long-term average is 20.9 while the average since 1901 is 21.1 ... in the warmer period 1975 to 2006 the average was 21.9. The past six summers (meaning 2007-12) have averaged 20.9, equal to the long-term average. The period 2013-16 then warmed to 23.0 so the past ten years have continued near the 1975-2006 pace, at 21.7.

The highest extremes are probably a lot better known to weather "buffs" than the lowest annual max values, so I had a look at those. 1860 and 1862 stand out with 17.2 and 17.3 the best those years could manage. A more recent period of cool summers appears 1962-66, five years when the value 20.0 was never achieved.

 

__Annual Minimum Daily Means 1772-2017 and coldest of winter seasons__

Two notes here, 2017 is of course not yet over so the value of -0.1 in January is not "set" and this table could therefore change. It is probably settled in as the coldest of winter 2016-17. Also, 1786 could have had a value in December, the data are missing, but it is not as likely as the winter seasonal minimum for 1786-87 which I have assigned to December on probability (see the table for that period for details).

Not every annual minimum is a winter minimum, but there are two cases where a year managed to secure two different coldest of winter from tied values at either end of the year. There are numerous cases where a year claims two winters, as well as those where it claims no winters.

The following count for coldest mean daily per year follow the same logic as the max, the number includes 0.5 for ties in different months, and the number in brackets gives the number of times the month at least had a share.

Despite the fact that January and February CET means are often very close in 30-year periods and not that different (3, 4) over a longer term, January and even December score higher than February on this index. A small part of the reason is length of month, February has only 90% of the time available, but probably the bigger reason is solar angle, a cold February day can achieve a somewhat higher maximum.

The most frequent date for the annual minimum is 1 Jan (count 8.0, 9 instances, so twice this date tied both times with 2 Jan). 28 December had a count of 7.5 with 8 instances. 22 December scored six while 23 January scored five and otherwise the count remains fairly even at about 2-4 per day through the heart of the winter season which appears to be 15 Dec to 15 Feb.

In the heart of the winter season, the dates that did least well at scoring a coldest of year include 3 and 5 Feb around the time when the annual temperature curve shows a bit of a spike.

The range of dates is 9 Nov (1921) to 21 March 1872 (later tied on 11 Dec).

The average of this annual minimum over the entire 245-year period is -3.7, and this has risen to reach -3.0 since 1901. From 1988 to 2007 a two-decade mean of -1.6 was observed, but this has fallen back to -2.0 for the twenty-five years 1988-2012. For a ten-year period 1795 to 1804, the average was as low as -6.0 ... and this appears to be about the same value that other colder periods have had, although most of those did not last ten years, for example, 1890-95 (six years) managed an average of -6.3. The ten-year average of -4.6 from 1978 to 1987 was not often bettered in the colder 19th century or late 18th century.

Meanwhile, the winter seasonal count looks very similar, although about one-third of winter seasonal minimum values are not annual minima for their particular year. The various possibilities seem to cancel out almost equally, but February does score a bit higher.

The range in this variable runs from 12 Nov 1919 (for winter 1919-20) to 21 March 1899 (coldest of winter 1898-99).

Since quite a few years use up two cold annual values in the seasonal count, the long-term mean of this index is higher, at -3.5, and has risen to -2.9 since 1901. The recent winter season values are more similar to the annual values.

wow what a lot of work Roger, I've skimmed through each post but need to spend more time. The winter data is interesting regarding the frequency of 'cold' values (taking your period as Nov-March which is a reasonable thing to do I think). It may answer some of the, at times, ill founded comments in various threads about which month is statistically colder than another?

Thanks John, I have been extensively number-crunching for research and these tables are just a diversion from that work which takes up a good chunk of my time, as I try to compare various index values with the same kind of analysis for North American data.

Some day I hope to present some of this here (in a different thread and probably not in this forum).

The winter extremes are from a filter that is actually 1 July to 30 June so if there had been any values in October or April they would have appeared in the tables, but it would no doubt take a very mild winter to get colder days in those months into the mix. I recall seeing a close call on 30 Oct of one winter season (as defined) and there have been days in certain years in October and April that were colder than the highest extremes, but they were nowhere near qualifying in their own season.

Readers should note that I took as much time and care with this as was practical and I hope the results are very accurate but there could be one or two errors given the complexity. The values are produced by defining ranges and searching for MAX and MIN values. The dates were found manually by scrolling through the daily data (first on my file then cross-checked with the source file).

What surprised me the most was the frequency of November coldest of winter and coldest of year values, and several of them not that far back in the record. I would have guessed a lower frequency. I think that for Toronto, the frequency of November extremes in a winter season would be about 1-2 per cent. Here (CET) it comes out at 6%. I was a bit surprised by how January overpowered February although not that surprised maybe. The summer data were more like I had visualized and in terms of distribution seem quite similar to Toronto although the 1 October outlier is not matched, despite a few close calls. On the other hand, 22 April was the warmest day of 1842 in Toronto. But May is not very common as a source of warmest day there either.

If anyone spots an error in these tables, let me know, I think I could get a moderator to edit them.

LARGEST CHANGES IN DAILY CET (from day to day)

I ran a program on the daily CET values to find out the largest changes from one day to the next, over the period 1772-present.

There were three days that warmed by more than 10 C deg, they were:

Feb 7, 1830 ... 11.2 warmer (4.8 from -6.4)

Jan 4, 1836 ... 10.7 warmer (8.2 from -2.5)

Jan 21, 1838 ... 10.5 warmer (-1.4 from coldest day on record -11.9)

These cover the largest increases for Jan and Feb. The rest of the monthly records are as follows:

14 days from 26 June to 9 July 1826 were warmer than 19.3, the spell failed to qualify above, max 22.8 on 27 June.

 

14 days from 7 to 20 July 1921 were warmer than 18.0, the spell failed to qualify above, max 22.3 on 18 July.

 

13 days from 4 July to 16 July 1852 were warmer than 18.5, the spell failed to qualify above, max 24.0 on 5 July.

 

*12 days from 8 Aug to 19 Aug 1893 were warmer than 18.4, the spell produced a 7d qualifying period above.

 

** 20 days from 27 July to 15 Aug 1995 were warmer than 18.2 and the 7 days 3-9 Aug qualified with consecutive days above 20, other separate periods would not have qualified for the "almost" section.

 

Not all hot summers have lengthy spells above 19, for example, July 1868 had numerous days above 19.0 but spells of only 5 or 6 days with interruptions. Then July and August 1911 had many hot days but again, no qualifying spells, the closest was 8 days 7-14 August where five were above 20 but not consecutively.A nine day spell in July 1923 (6-14 Jul) also failed to qualify despite six (non-consecutive) days above 20 and a max of 24.0 on the 13th. The hottest day on record in late July 1948 (25.2, 29th) was part of five conseutive days above 20 but that spell failed to start and end with qualifying days and was relatively isolated otherwise. A similar outcome was found the next July (1949) from 23rd to 27th although this was a less intense hot spell. The hot spell in August 1990 was only four days of 20+ days and two others over 18. Five hot days 10-14 July 2005 also fell short.

 

An early summer period that failed to qualify was seven days from 29 May to 4 June 1947, there were five non-consecutive days above 20 in that spell.

From the above and other investigations, I have estimated that the probability of at least one spell of 20.0 C or higher mean CET would be close to the following (more of a smoothed distribution than actual towards the higher values):

 

1 day .... 80%

2 days ... 45%

3 days ... 22%

4 days ... 10%

5 days ... 7%

6 days ... 5%

7 days ... 3%

 

10 days ... about 1%

 

15 days ... about 0.2% or one in 500.

 

The climate seems to be able to sustain 30-day periods with all CET averages above 17 or 18 but would be hard pressed to manage 20 consecutive days at 20.0 C or higher.

 

It is noticeable that the longer spells seem to settle into very similar values, not to each other but within the spells.

 

The frequency of long hot spells has obviously increased and was very low from about 1830 to 1970. It peaked quite anomalously in the period 1975 to 2006 but was also well represented in the much earlier period 1793 to 1825 which is more or less the Dalton minimum, oddly enough. This may illustrate that a cold, dry climate regime has a tendency to gather some hot, dry summer analogues in somewhat similar patterns.

interesting that only 1 year 1995 shows two such periods?
