I am hoping to be able to edit some of the tables in this thread but until that becomes possible ...

new daily record --3.8 C min for 1st of March (2018)

The value of --1.1 C on 18th narrowly missed the previous mark of --1.3 (1853).

I noticed in passing that the title of post 2 has vanished (it should read CET means 1981-2010).

Some new records to note:

First, 30 March 2018 CEP (rainfall) new record is 14.0 mm (previously 8.7 in 1992).

Then on the temperature front, two new daily records in April 2018

18 Apr ... 17.0 (2018) was 14.5 (1945)
19 Apr ... 17.6 (2018) was 15.4 (1870) .

This removed from the chronicles the short period of 12 days from 18 Apr 1945 (before this year max daily record) to 30 Apr 1945 (minimum daily record).

This year showed a similar tendency with two days to spare when it went from 17.6 on 19th to 6.5 on 29th. However that's nowhere near a daily minimum record until we get well on into May.

The 17.6 was the second warmest day ever in mean April daily temperatures and the 17.0 was joint fourth. First and third still belong to 1775 and the other joint fourth was the 16th of 1945 which remains the earliest 17.0; 19th April is the earliest 17.1 or higher to 17.6. The all time record of 19.7 goes to 29th April of 1775.

Two new daily rainfall records for the CEP (1931 to present) in April, these are:

1st _ 15.3 mm (was 12.9, 1973)

27th _ 10.0 mm (was 8.7, 2003).

April was seventh wettest since 1981 with a total of 78.0 mm, so not record-breaking in the CEP zone at least. The UKP average was 91.5 mm.

Warmest and coldest weeks (1772 to present)

This table shows the warmest and coldest weeks ending on each date of the year. The weeks ending 1 Jan to 6 Jan use some number of days from the previous December so the years are shown like 1987-88 for the warmest 25 Dec to 01 Jan. The periods around 1 to 6 March are blind to leap year day (in other words they are all seven-day intervals and could be in leap years including leap year day; the one exception is the week 23 Feb to 29 Feb which has to be in a leap year. Top and bottom three values are shown to two decimal places. Values in bold coloured type are extremes within the month. Values in bold italic where listed would break that extreme using some days of the month in question. As with January, this could happen at both ends of the month. When that is the case, the less extreme of the two has an asterisk beside it. For example, 10.34 for 31 Jan to 6 Feb is warmer than the entirely January date max of 9.36, but the interval of 28 Dec to 3 Jan 2021-2022 (10.56) is warmer than both. The least extreme case entirely within any month is shown in italic print, and that set is not augmented with values within two months. For example, the max of 8.46 for 4-10 Jan and 10-16 Jan is the lowest value of the 25 between 7 and 31 January. The reader can use the data near ends of January to assess whether that value is subject to revision if any date in January is considered (in this case, no extreme is lower than 8.46).

_____________________________________________________________________________

The two last entries for coldest week are both in italics as technically 23-29 Feb has the least extreme value but

the sample size for leap years is small so the least extreme value from 22-28 Feb is also highlighted.

10.53 23 Feb to 01 Mar 1846 will appear in the next post as warmest week that includes any February days.

^ The closest that Jan 2020 came to entering this table was a value of 7.77 (6-12 Jan).

+ 2021 missed third place here at 8.80.

* replaced 9.21 from 1926.

Warmest and coldest weeks (continued -- March/April)

These are the three warmest and coldest weeks (ending on dates shown in table) in the period of record 1772 to 2018. For the first six entries here (1 to 6 March) the start date of the weeks can be different depending on whether the year is a leap year or a non-leap year. After 7 March, the starting date is defined as six days previous. See the previous post for explanation of colour codes and italic entries.

^ Note on 1777: Despite several consecutive records, the highest rank achieved was 7th for 22-28 March.

Warmest and coldest weeks (continued -- September / October)

These are the three warmest and coldest weeks (ending on dates shown in table) in the period of record 1772 to 2017. See the first post in the series for explanation of colour codes and italic entries. Weeks end on the dates shown, e.g., 1 October refers to the weekly interval 25 September to 1 October.

September managed to provide some unexpected outcomes. First, the month did not need any help from August to set a weekly maximum, so there's no red italic number in the period 1-6 September. The interval of 3 to 9 September, 2006 managed 19.96, higher than any value since 21-27 August 1955. The lowest weekly maximum (16.94) was rather early, 16 to 22 September, the eight possible intervals later in the month were all warmer and so were ten of the first weekly maxima (ending in) October. Also the coldest week was even earlier, 7.67 for 12 to 18 September. That was the coldest until 27 to 3 October. October was somewhat more as you might expect in all of those areas but had its own unexpected quirk (see note below the 31 October entry) in that it got no help from November in creating a coldest week that includes days from October.

October needed no help from November, or at least got no help, in creating the coldest week that includes days in October,

the value of 1.57 for 24-30 Oct remains intact through 6 November and in fact is the coldest until 7-13 November.

^ This value was almost replaced by 14.47 for 9-15 Oct 2018.

*Third place maximum 14 Dec also tied in 2016.

The table now continues with the first post in this series. That post shows the coldest interval that includes

any December days is entirely within December. (13 to 19 Dec 1859). None of the first six entries in January

were colder.

Will post a summary of the longest intervals with weekly extremes. December 2015 is obviously going to be high

on any such list.

note: in preparing this section, one error was found in the tables above (edit not available) ... min on 5 Oct of 6.70 was set in 1888 not 1889 as table reads. that fact is reflected in the lists below since a spell of consecutive cold weekly intervals began on that date.

Longest spells of extreme warmth and cold

... compared in same table in two columns ...

This is a list of the longest consecutive, unbroken intervals with highest or lowest values. The periods covered are six days longer than the number of consecutive intervals. As one example, 28 June to 10 July 1976 was 13 intervals of warmest weeks, so 19 days (from 22 June to 10 July) during which each date was part of a warmest week.

A second table shows the longest cases of long runs of high ranking values not all the highest or lowest but all in the top or bottom three.

Ties are listed in chronological order from earliest to most recent. Whether warm or cold, the order is based on years.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Some long spells of warm or cold weather failed to make this second list due to one day missing.

An example would be warmth 19-28 Nov 1994 but 21st missed so maximum spell was seven days.

Looking at the rather large number of three and four day spells, it would seem that in general terms,

a notable warm spell will be 4 to 7 days in duration at least, those that set records but last only 2-3 days

are unusual.

Some new records were set in May 2018 ...

(1) Warmest daily CET mean for 7th 16.9 (was 16.8 in 2008).

(2) Wettest 24th CEP now 13.8 mm (was 9.7 mm in 2014).

(3) Driest 10-day intervals ending 22 and 23 May, both 0.1 mm.

... previous records 0.3 1992 and 0.6 2010.

June CEP (Central England Precip) figures show some ties for driest 10-day intervals ending 27 to 30 June.

This is because 18 to 30 June came in essentially dry, the way I have been assembling the data, I round off to nearest tenth of mm while the table presents by nearest .01 mm. That is because the data before 1950 were almost always rounded that way, then the hundredths began to appear in the tables. So I have gone back to check the unrounded values of the various years that produced the other zero totals for 18-27, 19-28, 20-29 and 21-30 June. Pretty certain there will be further records to compare moving forward into July when that month reports.

In 2018, the actual daily values were 18th (0.03 mm), 19th (0.01 mm), 20th (0.02 mm), 21st to 29th (0.00 mm) and 30th (0.01 mm).

This list shows how the four tied records of 0.0 (adding up rounded values) will compare with tied years by unrounded totals. The tied years only appear if they add up to zero mm rounded to participate in the record values table, a missing value means a total greater than or equal to 0.1 mm.

PERIOD ____ 2018 ____ 1942 __ 1949 __ 1975 __ 1995

18-27 Jun ___ 0.06 ____ ----- ____ 0.00 ___ ---- ___ 0.00

19-28 Jun ___ 0.03 ____ 0.00 ____0.00 ___ ---- ___ 0.00

20-29 Jun ___ 0.02 ____ ----- ____ 0.00 ___ 0.00 __ 0.00

21-30 Jun ___ 0.01 ____ ----- ____ 0.00 ___ 0.00 __ 0.00

Therefore the ties on rounding are not quite ties absolutely as none of the years in question had even 0.01 daily reports (1942 and 1949 might have, the practice was still to round off in the tables, by 1975 and 1995 there are definitely examples of 0.01 to 0.04 type amounts in other spells).

Noted an error in the minimum precip tables for 1976, instead of 0.0 ending 1-3 July, should be 30 June to 2 July, so add 1976 to 30 June and remove from 3 July.

Fairly soon I am going to create a new thread with updated tables and abandon this one because of the lack of edit function.

July 2018 was the third warmest on record and fourth warmest month.

27th new record 22.5, replaces 21.9 (1948)

22-28 July mean 20.64 replaced 20.44 (1989) as second warmest for that interval.

23-29 July mean 20.20 replaced 20.13 (1948) as second warmest for that interval.

16 day spell of days 18.0 or warmer from 25th June to 10th July average CET of 19.36 ...

not a top ten mean for these spells but tied fifth for duration.

The interval 27 June to 27 July would have been a 19.3 C 31 day month.

Some catchup data here to start:

2017 max 21.9 on 19 June

2017 min -0.4 on 12 Dec

2017-18 winter min -3.8 on 1 March

so far 2018 extremes 22.5 on 27 July and -3.8 on 1 March

-------------------------------

now some additional dry records for CEP data in July

-- all 0.0 ten-day totals ending 1-10 July are tied by 2018

-- one 0.1 ten-day min on 4 July (1943) broken by 0.0 in 2018

-- record of 0.1 on 11 July tied by 2018

Dry spell 18 June to 12 July was 25 days, within which 19 June to 10 July all rounded to 0.0, 22 days. This was about the third or fourth longest dry spell ever recorded since 1931.

Daily records set in October 2018:

18.5 on 13th was new maximum (16.8 1990 old) and was a "latest in season" outlier record (removing 17.8 on 10th of 1921 and 17.6 on 11th of 1978 from the list of outliers). The next outlier is the 17.2 from 14th of 2017, then the following outlier remains 16.9 on 31st of October (set 2014).

The rainfall of 15.7 mm on 14th broke the daily maximum of 11.1 mm from 1987. (the 15th of 1987 (18.6 mm) had also fallen to 33.3 mm in 2002, so now both parts of the rainfall preceding the great windstorm of Oct 1987 have been removed as daily records).

There was a discussion of close record max and min following this post originally, and while working on this, I spotted an even closer pair, just four days apart -- max on 27 April 1866 was followed by min on 1st of May 1866.

The November 2018 mean of 8.3 removes one of the closest to normal "never recorded" monthly values. Now 8.8 is November's closest to average missing CET value.

This is the full list after November 2018, the least extreme values are closest to the long-term average in the central column of the table. This table includes the least extreme unclaimed values between the current extremes for each month.

By a wide margin, 5.9 (DEC) is the most surprising missing value. If it occurred this year, it would rank 96th warmest. The highest ranked missing value other than that would be 1.3 in Feb (would rank 31st coldest). 7.7 next October would be 26th coldest.

Perhaps the least represented value is 3.1 in January with one case (1832) -- that despite the fact that 3.1 is only 0.2 below the long-term average for January. This month is ranked 149th coldest.

New record high daily precip (CEP) for 15 Dec is 10.1 mm (narrowly edges out 10.0 mm from 1989).

This thread in general is being replaced one post at a time in a new thread in this historical weather forum, C.E.T. Averages and Extremes 1772 to 2018. So far I have transferred most of page one over to there and while doing so, I found a few typos that are fixed now.

New daily CEP records for 10 and 12 June include the second wettest June day (since 1931) on 10th (32.4 mm). Only 19 June 1973 was wetter at 35.6 mm. Also, the ten intervals from 1-10 June to 10-19 June 2019 were wettest ten day intervals and the wettest of them (92.5 mm for 4-13 June) was the highest ten-day total at any point in the year except for 11-20 and 12-21 Dec 1989.

Still in this older thread for CEP records ... new daily record on 30th, the 28th failed to break a higher mark. Also new 10-day total records for 29-30 Sep and provisionally very likely to 3 Oct (all five broken were in 1976). These tables are back on page 3 of this thread. Eventually all of the better tables will find their way over to the 1772-2018 thread which has most of the temperature data now.
