Hi,

My friend is looking to buy a new camera and would like a decent entry level SLR.

Does anyone have any recommendations. She's currently looking at a Nikon D3100.

Thanks

Good lenses make the shot rather than the box they fasten too.

But are rather expensive and you can only use one at a time.

Does she have a friend with Nikon she could borrow from?

Then buy odd items over time...

A lot of good lightly used stuff comes up on ebay.

It is a difficult decision in that once committed to a make it's quite hard to change later when you have various items and software only work with one brand.

All the well known names are good but you do need to look at likely future add-on purchases.

Can't go wrong With Nikon or Canon, and sticking with the major players will give you more options for future trade ins.

Hey Hun, the Nikon D3100 is a good one to start with but is missing some of the nice features other DSLR's have such as bracketing . The advice I was given is to break it down to 3 or four different makes/models and go to a shop to play around with them to see what you think is easier to handle and use

Good advice Claire and 4wd. have a browse of www.dpreview.com and compare cameras on there. Once you have narrowed down what features sound useful in your price rangel (live view, sensor clean, video modes, megapixels, speed etc) then go and play with the cameras and see which one fits and feels best. The other option is to go for a slightly older camera on ebay, and spend the change on some good glass to replace any kit lenses, as they tend to be a little lacking optically.
