April Cet

Great to see that we have at last seen a below average April - the coldest for 23 years, and 0.5*C colder than the next coolest of the last 23 years - 2001, which was in fact only 0.2*C below the 61-90 mean and still not even 0.5*C below the 71-00 mean.

Now that we have cracked a decently below average April, the next month in the year that has not been below average for many years is now September, there hasn't been a below average September, give or take 0.1-0.3*C, since 1994.

The below average April we have just had takes the annual rolling CET to 10.38*C. If the next eight months (May to December) period was to be close to average by 1961-90, or even 1971-2000 standards, then there should be a decent chance of a sub 10*C CET year for 2012. This could include a colder month or two and a warmer month or two. A sub 9.5 year for 2012 is highly unlikely, as this would require a second half like 1993, or a repeat of the Nov / Dec 2010 severe cold spell at the end of the year. However, if the trend of patterns that has largely dominated since last September persisted then another very warm year would result for 2012.

Looking through some of the finalised data and it seems, surprisingly enough, that the highest minimum recorded so far this year has been 9.2C on January 1st.

I wonder how long that will last?

So nearly a sub 7 degree month but not quite. However, it has been a proper below average April, a complete contrast to last April and many recent Aprils' which have been preety mild despite the odd cooler or average April such as 1998, 2001 and 2006/2008.

It has felt like a cold month coming on the back of the exceptional warmth of March. Indeed a major flip from the 6 week very mild sunny dry spell that set in after the 2 week cold spell in early feb. Certainly 2012 has started off with long periods of homogenous conditions. The first 4 weeks of Jan being generally mild (shortlived colder dry spell mid month), then a distinct cold 2 week period, then a 6 week very mild sunny dry period, then a 4 week cold very wet period (probably can add another 2 weeks to this particular period going on the current outlook), wonder what next... ooh summer is on the way and probably a return to less homogenous conditions, more a long period of topsy turvy mixed weather with cool and mild spells occuring in regular succession as opposed to distinct warm dry sunny periods and colder wet periods..

April 1989 really was a bit if an anomaly coming on the back of three very mild months, and followed by 4-5 very warm months.. a very odd month in a sea of warmth.

So finally the coldest april since 1989,quite surprised it went back down to 7.2c after looking at climate uk,just a pity april turned out to be such a record washout in the end.

After some of the aprils of 2000 being unprecidented hot(summer came in april)and not normal as say the 90`s global chaos strikes again.
