Just been on the Midlands thread - Nottingham & Birmingham areas have a decent covering, but still light to moderate ppn.

I really struggle to see how we will get significant snow now.

Freezing rain and ice pellets here, no snow flakes.

I don't think this event was played out to be significant tbf. 2-5cms was my prediction and I still think frontal activity will gradually increase with SN likely soon.

There is a line of quite intense precipitation on the radar, not particularly "wide" but I think it may well give many of us 2 to 4 hours of heavy precipitation between 7 and 11pm before the band clears. Currently a dusting of ice pellets on the ground at Cleadon, reminiscent of small hail, even though hail forms under very different circumstances.

I can't see any strong signs of this batch of precipitation being associated with higher temperatures on low ground- it is still just below 1C around Morecambe Bay with the main belt almost upon that area of the country for example. The main question is whether the polar maritime airmass digging in behind the cold front will help to reduce the extent of that warmer air at high altitudes which is resulting in ice pellets instead of snow.

12z shows the cold holding the mild air back which increaces chances of the ppn being snow here.....

it seems to be intensifying to the west and heading this way. A possible covering, dont expect more.

Just got home and there is an icy dusting of frozen sleet and snow. The front will have moved through in a few hours so I'm confident enough to call this as a non event. Disappointing, but not totally unexpected.

I had ice pellets like this in November 2008.

It looks like it's really intensifying to the north of us is it not?

Difficult to tell. It would be nice to get a cm of proper snow before it stops though.

It's not difficult to tell it's very obvious on the NW free radar. The reds and oranges of heavier PPN are increasing and actually backbuilding slightly...

The warm front has stalled, and I think this is causing the precipitation to intensify as the cold front slams into it. There isn't that much more precipitation left for Newcastle though, but York and Leeds could be looking at 10 cm as they already have 3.

I reckon it's game over in an hour and a half for us.

I see it, but I'm not expecting much from it, and it's quite narrow so it won't snow or rain for long.

Torrential freezing rain now, quite a thick layer of ice on top of the dusting of snow.

50p sized flakes mixing into what is becoming quite an ice storm!

The rooftops are turning white again despite the fact that it is 75% ice.

I have never seen freezing rain like this before like my car is literally encased in ice!!?

The scene outside at Cleadon resembles what we'd normally see after a hailstorm in one of those marginal sunshine-and-wintry-showers setups with all concerte surfaces covered in ice- I can't remember having experienced ice pellets on this large a scale.
