The rather chilling thing is that this is just the start of the season too....................

You can really see how unlucky they were with the right moving motion. To make matters worse, it appears as though it resumed it's WNW motion and occluded just in time to hit Moon which would have been North of the path had it kept right moving. Sometimes you get the feeling these tornadoes are just aiming for towns these days... :(

Yes, clear as day the signature and that's clearly a direct hit for the town and it appears a tornado hit part of the town on Wednesday too, talk about unlucky!

Cell which went through West Liberty has cycled. Massive couplet again and heading in the direction of Chesapeake, WV. Plenty of rural forest in the way but at it's current speed, It's probably there in under 30 mins. Hope it doesn't hold up as that is a very populated area.

Many reports of tornadoes yesterday through parts of 'Dixie' alley with the current preliminary count standing at 95. A few tornadoes were reported to be large and long tracking with one estimated to be around a mile wide as it swept through Henryville Indiana.

Not on the scale of yesterday but there are some warnings out today for tornados and severe thunderstorms in Florida. Am watching "Warmsector" on http://chase.tornadovideos.net/pages/full_screen at the moment who appears to be in a good position.

After watching the vid Cookie posted, what a great job storm chases do by warning the public which direction the tornados are moving in, so thay can stay safe. They seem to do a better job than there own goverment.

To be fair the NOAA do a fantastic job in warning the public and despite huge budget cuts in other areas the Nexrad network is currently being upgraded. This is in addition to the good coverage from the News networks. The downfall to all this is there is no federal requirement to have tornado sirens or shelters in vulnerable areas

Fair enough, but these guys pin point them and i would of thought a few miles would make a big difference to saving lives?

To be fairm Tornado Sirens are not even intended for any use other than an outdoors warning siren. The expectation is that people should use NOAA weather radios as their primary source of severe weather information and warning. Much more information can be given through this medium than with the use of sirens which have a very limited range of tones. For some reason though, takeup of weather radios is very low, despite them being heavily subsidised and very cheap. Think my weather radio cost about $13 which is nothing for something which can save your life... I do think there is an element of anti-government sentiment which will make any federally enforced NOAA radio laws fail in certain areas of the USA. People in general don't like being told what to do, even if it is for their own good.

very true, buti t's not necessarily just weather radios, I read an article just after Joplin, saying that tornado shelters are not part of the building code requirements in such areas which is odd considering the rules and regs on buildings in US earthquake zones.

I guess it comes down to money and politics.

I agree they are a good source of information and make more people aware of the dangers inherent with severe weather

Yeah I watched Micheal Phelps, who does StormscapeLive, last year doing a tour of one of his first ever chases. Off the top of my head it was the Andover F5 1991 event. But it hit a mobile home park, which I gather are quite common in the US. The storm shelter they had built there could only fit around half the people who lived there in it. And even now years after, the same park still has the same storm shelter and the same would happen again should another tornado come tearing through. Would not like to live out there without a shelter of some form. Seems its quite common though still.

After some brain bashing and googling and google maps/streetview, it was the Andover F5. This little shelter for some many people http://g.co/maps/23sfw

There's a small chance of some action today, down in the Missisipi/Texas area. 1" hail reported widely already in Kansas and Oklahoma.
