I've been a member on this forum many years and yet I can't easily find a comprehensive list of acronyms and abbreviations to translate some of the terms used by more seasoned posters on here.

I found this (below) but it's deeply down in the archives

http://forum.netweat...-abbreviations/

a little googling found these:

http://www.srh.noaa....rx/glossary.php

http://www.srh.noaa..../acronyms_a.htm

I wander if it would be possible to have a 'pinned' topic in the help area to enable any new visitors (or those like myself who need a little refreshing) to view a concise list of weather terms / Acronyms and abbreviations with maybe a single line to explain ? Maybe even (dare I suggest) a quick link at the head of the model discussion thread :whistling:

I'd start a list but haven't clue what I am talking about ! - still learning, enthusiastically (-;

Mods please feel free to delete this if indeed there is a more recent thread on this subject out there

its here PP in the Net Wx Guides, just scroll down the page until you come to it.

It seemed the best place to put it when I made the list-not exhaustive but I hope most are in there.

Well worth looking in the Guides section anyone else if you want an answer to many things mentioned in the weather threads.

Thank you taking the time to reply.. I've had a good browse through the 'guides' section and come to the conclusion that I'm still unable to easily comprehend all the information that you have undoubtably taken many hours to compile over the years. All I see is a list of more words.

I've grabbed a few pages and put the content into 'wordle" (google it) to illustrate what confusion I see. Maybe I'm mad?

My better half's brother is a theoretical particle physicist mostly dealing with quantum / matrix / an' other stuff and bless him he has to do presentations to keep his job. These presentations are to folk with a bare minimum of understanding of quantum physics, the presentations are aptly named 'colloquial's' They intern prove to his superiors that he has the ability to inspire and inform the less informed & that he knows what he's talking about.. the result is that most are encouraged on to trust him, aren't scared to ask silly questions and therefore proactively ensure an environment for more questions!

It's easy to fundamentally know something and be passionate about it yet not so easy to enable others to get it..

I digress...

With all the information that you and so many other here on NetWeather have to hand, is it not possible to compile a list of acronyms, abbreviations and explanations of words such as shortwave, FI, nao, bartlett, models, ensembles, blocking, pooling, dam, vortex and even 'run' etc etc into one simple list? Maybe limit editing to those with 'cred' on the forum ? Maybe someone could come up with a definition for 'Ooon' (Osbourne one nil)? (-;

I've noticed NetWeather is growing every year but I fear there will be a point when folk just get put off viewing technical terms used to describe the weather especially with reference to the 'models'. It will evolve to a point when it becomes merely a club for the 'knowing'.

Some visit the site curiously, to understand from the ground up or just find it via the google thingy, so isn't it about time some effort is put into displaying and explaining the basics at ground zero in a simple way to encourage shy enthusiasts like myself to brave coment without fear of ridicule in apparent ignorance? Things get soo hot in winter especially!

There are folk here who have commented with wise literate and technical pros and there are those who just get into the excited banter held in the unknown - it's all good - but wouldn't it be better if there was a language everyone could understand.

Simply post up the most common technical words used in the model discussions and explain them - I wish I knew how to do this.

mods, delete as appropriate

with respect
