I think it's going to be another mild month without being record-breaking. I think the first half could be very mild indeed but this may then be offset somewhat by an average second half. Therefore I'm going for 5.9C.

I bet if this December had turned out cold then there'd be a lot more cold CET guesses predictions. :p

Ok my prediction is 3.5 degrees masking what will be a month of two distinct halves.

I'm expecting the first half of the month to remain preety unsettled with a continuation of the zonal pattern we have endured in recent weeks - very much a mixture of everything we saw during december, alternating polar maritime and tropical maritime air, with a strong possibility of another northerly toppler event through the second week very similiar to what we saw the weekend before christmas. Generally wet and windy for many, good sunny spells in the east and southeast from time to time.

Mid month - pattern change as we see heights building more favourably to our NW with strong scandi troughing and low pressure forced on a more NW-SE path digging into southern europe. Probably will take until the 20th before we see any significant wintry weather, but the last third of the month should see generally cold or very cold conditions, not sure whether it will be a snowy cold spell or a dry frosty cold spell.

The generally mild first half will cancel out the much colder last third, but the cold will be enough to make for a below average month in the end.

Still expecting February to be our coldest month this winter.

Also not expecting the models to start to show with any confidence the expected pattern change until early in the second week of the month (in this respect I won't be too worried of nothing being shown to suggest the change within the next week or so, its all about the teleconnections at present and background signals).

I can't see any signs of sustained cold before the end of the month so I'll go for 5.1c.

Revising slightly:

2.5C, cold arriving in the last 10-15 days.

Revising for the last time... So zonal it's unreal.

Mild crap continuing until at least the 15th. This is REALLY grinding my gears...

4.0C is my guess. :(
