Hi! I was just wondering if there were many good examples of arctic maritime air flooding the uk and perhaps producing hard frosts/wintry showers or snow. Basically anything from early April onwards, the later, the better :)

Any very potent (-10c 850's perhaps) air in April/early May would also be useful- thanks.

Some good examples:

Late April 1908

Early April 1917

Mid-May 1935

Mid-May 1955

Early May 1979

Late April 1981

I don't have time to attach the corresponding Wetterzentrale archive charts at the minute. I'm sure you know where to find them though. :p

Here's a relatively recent one in May:

It snowed here in Cleadon that day, and a heavy snowstorm at around 6pm briefly produced a smattering on the ground.

I can see where you're coming from with this topic (always controversial on this forum as many have switched to looking only for warmth long before then!). Frost and snow have historically been relatively common during April over the years, with a similar mean frequency to November, although any snow cover tends to disappear quickly when the sun gets out. The Easter Sunday 2008 snowfalls occurred in late March, but there was another bout of snowy weather around the 6th/7th April 2008 with falling and lying snow penetrating to some southern coastal counties.

In May it has always been relatively rare, but the period 1998-2011 has been exceptional for its lack of snowy May northerlies, with only 2005 and 2010 producing widespread frosts and only 2010 producing fairly widespread snowfalls in the north. In the 1980s and 1990s there were widespread snowfalls in the north in roughly one in three Mays.

Thanks guys, there is something about late snowfalls and late arctic cold spells that fascinates me, good to know i'm not the only one, not sure why the mildies hate cold spells in spring as they mostly bring lovely crisp blue wonderful skies with warm sunshine.

why snow after 31st Jan isnt as good

Don't agree, there have been some wonderful cold and snowy spells in february.
